Secret to bouncing a ball on your
wedge
Beginners often try to start by dropping a ball on the clubface. A better approach is to scoop the ball off the ground. Be sure to start in fluffy rough, because a tight lie will make it hard to get the club under the ball. Angle the shaft forward as if you were hitting a chip shot, and use your wrist to scoop under the ball.
Next, point the face—with the ball on top—to the sky. Immediately begin to bounce the ball by hinging your elbow like a lever. Don't use your wrist and avoid flicking the clubface. Rely on this elbow-lever to move the clubface up and down four to five inches at most.
The skill is like dribbling a basketball. Novices are inclined to slap at the ball. Instead, catch the ball on the clubface and pop it back up in the air with the same controlled softness that you would use to dribble a basketball.
