林散之，自幼喜欢书画。1972年中日书法交流选拔时一举成名，赵朴初、启功等称之诗、书、画“当代三绝”。 1989年12月6日因病辞世，终年90岁。林散之是“大器晚成”的典型。也正因为其出大名很晚，数十年寒灯苦学，滋养了其书之气、韵、意、趣，使之能上达超凡的极高境界。也因其书具有超凡脱俗的境界、深邃隽永的意韵，才能使书界中人对之品赏愈久，得益愈多，感受愈深，认识愈深。他对现代中国书法艺术事业的贡献，真可谓“功莫大焉”。
