Ten Thousand Things: Nurturing Life in Contemporary
Beijing takes
a variety of routes into the large and diverse phenomenon that is
life nurturing, or yangsheng, in contemporary Beijing. It
emphasizes the ways in which yangsheng activity fills and
transforms the space of the city. It reads some
of the popular literature that has given shape to an ongoing
yangsheng movement. It makes acquaintance with
the daily lives and values of the postrevolutionary generation that
most enthusiastically embraces life nurturance.
And it offers reflection some of the philosophical resources and
challenges that make more lasting sense of yangsheng
phenomena. Throughout, the aim is to hear,
echoing through the streets and parks of Beijing, the voice of a
distinctly modern activism chartered by a protean ancient
metaphysics; to read the tastes, pleasures, and disciplines of
contemporary urbanities as deliberate and deliberative; and to
allow cultured Chinese bodies to resonate with concerns of human
embodiment anywhere. The theme is life, but not
life itself-rather, it is modern life, Chinese life, park life,
social and political life, the life of the mind, spirited
liveliness, the life of healthy or ailing bodies, family life,
lives well nurtured. As the life-nurturing
literature keeps telling us, the shapes and currents of the myriad
things number then thousand upon ten thousand: birth upon birth,
transformation upon transformation. The meaning
of any particular thing – as long as it lasts, and with
considerable luck, skill, and determination – is gathered,
centered, and harmonized with the Way things
go.

The Chinese translation of Ten
Thousand Things: Nurturing Life in Contemporary
Beijing by Judith Farquhar and Qicheng Zhang
was recently published by San Lian with the title of
On May 30, 2019, a special book launch event will be held at the
University of Chicago Center in
Beijing.
Yangsheng is not just a mental or bodily commitment, but a total
participation; it is a form of attachment – not just to Chinese
culture, but to the living of life. Come to join
anthropologist Judith Farquhar and traditional Chinese medicine
scholar and philosopher Qicheng Zhang for their introduction to the
book and sharing their understanding of yangsheng and modern life
