Man is by Nature a Political Animal:
Evolution, Biology, and Politics
Why do people do what they do? Why do they want what they want? How do
they know what they want, and how do they go about trying to get it? These
are questions we—those who examine human behavior—all attempt to answer
in some form or another. The traditional approach in political science
has been to explore the “environmental” dimensions, whether by social learning
or happenstance, to determine where political preferences come from and
why we want what we want and do what we do. In this view, preferences are
based on socialization or personal experiences. However, what we typically
measure as “preferences” only refl ect the end result or outcome; they show
the expressed attitude or preference and do not explain the origin of the preference
or the process by which these preferences are developed, interpreted,
maintained, and expressed.
