My
Pocket
Money
By
Zhong Wanting
What do
you mean by saying ‘ I’m broke’? That means you have run out of
pocket money, and you will probably go to your parents to try to
get some more. But not me! I don’t get my pocket money from my
parents. I earn it by myself.
When I
refer to ‘earn it myself’, I do not mean to say that I get pay from
my parents by doing chores around the house, for this is just an
altered form of getting money from parents and not the real kind of
money earning. When we grow up, we can’t rely on our parents any
longer. By then, we must have a career of our own, and make a
living ourselves. By doing so, we are really earning money, money
that comes from society.
And now,
I’m acquiring some real social practice by writing for newspapers
and getting repayment. I can keep the money which will become my
pocket money.
In fact,
I used to ask for money from my parents However after a while, they
decided that I couldn’t get money from them forever, so they told
me that I had to earn money myself.
How could
I earn money? I certainly couldn’t work in stores for it was
against the low. Then how could I ‘make a living’?
After
pondering over this for a while, I suddenly had an excellent idea.
Why couldn’t I become an amateur writer? I felt confident in my
writing skills and by writing to newspapers and magazines, I could
keep the repayment of the articles were published!
Thus, I
began sending my works to publications and very soon, one of my
articles was published. I felt overjoyed when I read my own words
in the newspaper. Apart from my fresh allowance, the feeling of
success was also overwhelming.
