《Happy Little Reporter’s Club》 (2)
Lesson
Barbecue finished. We went to our rooms to have a rest. After that, we went to the Meeting Hall. We were told to select a lesson: putting up a tent, DIY folding and making a little newspaper, etc.
I went to learn folding, because I thought it was very interesting. Miss Ding Dong and Miss Mei Mei were responsible for this activity.
We went to the little houses. On the ground beside the row of small rooms, there were some tables and chairs. On the table, there were several packets of colorful paper, some scissors and a paper-knife, several color pens, some rolls of Scotch tapes and two-sided tapes and a bottle of glue.
Each of us planned to make a Pokémon, which was one of the most welcome cartoons. It was a Pikachu, the main character among the Pokémons.
First, we looked at some other Pokémon works. They were very well made. Then we started learning how to fold one. We all took two pieces of paper. We started folding by learning how to make the head. We watched Miss Ding Dong and Miss Mei Mei carefully. Then we folded the paper ourselves. Miss Ding Dong and Miss Mei Mei kept walking around the tables and instructed us at times. I folded the Pokémon step by step. At last, the head was completed. I used the color pens to draw the eyes, nose, mouth and the black patches on the tip of its ears. After I finished drawing, l looked at it proudly. It was very cute!
Then I began making the body of the Pikachu. I made a fat body. I cut the paper in order to make slits and fold the hands and feet of the Pikachu. After that, I made the tail. It was difficult, because I had to cut the paper very carefully. Otherwise, the paper would break. I moved the scissor slowly and carefully. I made a nice tail. Finally, I used the black pen to color it.
The last step was to stick
the head and the body together. Then a lovely
Pokémon
Next came the competition. We put our Pokémons on a table. Miss Mei Mei and Miss Ding Dong compared them.
First everyone received a comic book. Then Miss Ding Dong and Miss Mei Mei put the winners on the table. I won the first prize. We winners chose prizes. Miss Ding Dong put some Ling Nan Youngster’s Newspaper badges and small packs of color paper on the table. I picked a badge. It was nice with a blue background. I like blue.
The DIY Lesson was over. We all returned to our rooms happily with our prizes and Pokémons in our hands. What a great lesson! I got four things in total during this class: the Pokémon, a comic book , the badge and … the way to fold a Pikachu!
Noisy Night
It was dark after the class. I went to the bathroom. After brushing my teeth, I took a shower and put on my clean clothes. When I walked out, I saw my bedfellow washing clothes. I greeted her and then washed my own dirty clothes.
After a while, we went into the dormitory with the washing bucket and clothes. We hung our wet clothes on some hangers. When all things were in order, we sat on our bed and talked about next day’s activities.
While we were having a nice conversation, we heard some girls talking about ‘haunting ghosts’ on that night. We climbed up to the upper berth and sat there with the others because the lower berth was too dark. The talk about ghosts made my hair stand on my back. Suddenly, the light went out and a torch shone. A horrible sound came from somewhere in the room. I moved back slowly until I felt the wall. Then the noise stopped, the light from the torch went out and everything was left in darkness and quietness. We waited. Nothing happened. We sighed.
‘Perhaps…well…of course, it’s a trick.’ A girl said slowly and got up to turn on the light. No sooner had she stood up than the noise came again. We all fell silent. This time, the noise was louder, stranger and more TERRIBLE! It sounded like a cold laugh, which brought me to the story ‘Frankenstein’. In the story, Victor Frankenstein created a monster. The monster was cruel and ugly and killed many innocents. My heart beat faster. It was like a weeping sound. I thought about ghosts and zombies.
Suddenly, a torch shone around the room and fixed on a moving thing. It was white and was floating slowly!
My body shook. ‘Wh…wh…what is…is that?’ A girl nudged me and asked with a trembling voice.
‘I…I don’t know…’ I whispered.
Under the faint light of the torch, the white thing danced slowly. Suddenly, it began jumping violently… and it leaped at us!
‘GHOST…a ghost! Help!!!’ We screamed and clutched one another’s hands.
Just at the moment, the thing was gone with the torch. We let out a sigh of relief.
‘Huh! It’s just…’ I remarked, but then stopped. We all became silent.
My eyes fixed on the bed opposite. I could see something on it. But I couldn’t see it very clearly. Just then the torch reappeared. ‘Awful thing,’ I muttered. I said this because something bad always happened with it.
The torch shone on our faces. We quickly turned away because the torchlight was harsh to the eyes. Soon, the torch turned around and the light stopped on the bed opposite. We opened our eyes and sat there open-mouthed. My blood ran cold with fear.
On the bed opposite, I saw a face, a girl’s face, a frightening one! It was round with two big hollow eyes. It was looking straight at us. We saw an opened black mouth, with green, black and white teeth! The face was hollow too, with only a bit of green skin near the huge green eyes and the black mouth! The hair was black and green and a bit in disorder. The big glassy eyes and a strange green light made the face even more frightening. We trembled. A hand appeared beside the face. It was crooked and thin. It slowly rose to the eyes. Then the girl stood up. She glanced around the room and again, she sat down. We watched. Suddenly, the stiff hand rose up and down, as if the girl was trying to make a sign to us. A grin appeared on her face. A wicked laugh filled the room.
Again, I thought about Frankenstein. Was that Justine? Or was it Elizabeth? Was the evil monster coming?
‘It… it is… a zombie.’ A girl said quietly, with a quiver in her voice.
‘Aahhh!’ We shrieked. ‘A ZOMBIE here!’ No. A zombie? It couldn’t be. But…
Suddenly, the cold laughter stopped.
‘I will seek revenge… I will seek revenge…’ A cold, hollow, dreamy and low voice said cruelly with much hatred in it.
Was it Justine’s … or Elizabeth’s voice?
Probably … yes …
At the thought of a zombie, I jumped up. ‘Why, this room is haunted! Ghosts, strange light, zombie…’
‘My goodness!’ ‘By Jove!’
‘Help!!!’
‘Uuhhh!!!’ “Oouuu!!!’ ‘Aaahh!!!’
Shrieks and shouts filled the room.’
‘Hey, what’s going on here?’ Someone asked strangely.
‘This room is HAUNTED!’ We shouted.
‘Oh? Where’s the ghost?’ And the light was turned on.
‘Another ghost?’ A girl asked. We laughed. She was getting mad about it!
As we looked up, we saw Miss Mei Mei at the door, quite surprised by all the fuss here. We quickly searched for the ‘ghosts’. We laughed at the results. The first ghost was only a white dress hung near the window. It ‘jumped up’ because of the wind. The zombie was pretended by a girl. She lifted her head and turned on a torch. The torchlight made her look like a zombie. And you can guess what happened. She listened from the opposite upper berth. When she heard that we were discussing the topic ‘Middle July, Ghosts Run’, she decided to play a trick. Perhaps she thought the Chinese Ghost Festival was something like Halloween. As she was very close to the switch, she secretly turned off the light. We were in the middle of talking about ghosts. Her naughty act surely frightened us all out of wits!
We were amused by the girl’s ‘ghost joke’. The girl was still trying to fool us by pretending to be a zombie! Just then, 3 short whistles echoed in the corridor. That meant: ‘turn off the light and go to sleep!’ So the girl on the upper berth near the switch stretched out her hand and turned off the light. It was bedtime! Ten o’clock!
Just then, the torch appeared. I turned away my head to try to avoid it. Then whispers came into my ears. I could only hear a bit: ‘turn off …’ Crack, crack. ‘… hear …’ ‘Huh?’ ‘Please … don’t play …’ ‘Uh …’ ‘… can’t sleep …’ ‘… right’. Slowly the quarrel ended. The light from the torch disappeared. Everything became quiet again. I looked out of the window. I could see a car and the grassland. The night was very quiet.
At about midnight, I was waken up by a lot of noise. Somebody was crying. The sobs became louder and louder. Obviously, two girls were arguing. I turned around and around in my bed. I noticed that my bedfellow also was waken up. When I looked outside, to my horror, I saw the door was opened and two figures were in the corridor talking. I wondered who opened the door. Then suddenly I thought about the moment before bedtime. I thought about the flying ghost, the zombie … I thought about the girls’ topic --- the Ghost Festival. After a while, I saw the two figures clearly. They were tall. Oh, they were the camp leaders.
The light of the lamps in the corridor was harsh to my eyes. I turned away. My head ached with thoughts about ghosts and zombies. I tried to avoid the thoughts, the noise of the girls arguing and the light from the corridor, but I couldn’t. I looked out of the window. It was raining. Then, slowly, I fell asleep again.
Suddenly, the door shut. The windows closed. Everything became quiet. I pushed my bedfellow. Then, to my horror, I found nothing but the quilt and the pillow! I shouted to the girls on the opposite upper berth, yet there was no answer. I shouted to my friends, but still, there was no answer. I became very frightened. I jumped up. I went over to the door and tried to open it, but it was locked from the outside. I searched for the light switch, but couldn’t find it anywhere. Just at the moment, fire burned on the floor and knives stretched from the walls. I went to open the window. But when I opened it, a huge net landed on me and ghosts went in. The door opened and zombies rushed in. The room flew down to Hell. …
The whistle echoed in the corridor. I sat up in fright. Sunlight shone into the room. Ah, it was a new day! And that was just a nightmare. I looked at my watch. It was seven o’clock. The girls all got up. The room became active again.
After I brushed my teeth, washed my face and combed my hair, I went back to my room. I climbed up the ladder of the bed and then came down. It was great fun. I called it ‘morning exercise’.
Now, I planned to play a trick. There was a window in the room. Everyone could see the scenery outside though it. I walked out slowly and cautiously, pretending that I wanted to wash my hands. As I walked out, I looked around secretly to make sure nobody suspected me.
I went straight along the corridor. When I was away from my dormitory, I turned and ran to the back of my room though a passageway. I went to the window of my room. I saw my roommates were all busy talking. I smiled naughtily. I knelt down and raised my hands. I moved my fingers. I was sure the girls saw my hands because I heard them screaming. ‘Hey, a ghost came!’ ‘How terrible!’ The girls were talking.
I couldn’t help laughing. I went back to my dormitory. I walked into the room with my hands in my pockets, as if nothing had happened.
They never would have known who had played the trick if I hadn’t told them the secret. In fact, there aren’t any ghosts in the world at all.
Interview
After breakfast, we got on the bus and drove to visit a military base in Pan Yu. As we arrived at the base, we went into a large yard surrounded by buildings. There was a huge car-like thing in the yard. It was covered with a piece of green cloth. We all wondered what it could be. A car? A stone? A piece of structure?
When we all surrounded the
thing,
After visiting the military base, we all went to interview some drug addicts in a kind of prison for them.
We saw the drug addicts sitting behind iron bars. We interviewed them. They were very pained. They told us that after the police’s patient teaching, they knew drug was harmful to themselves and the society. One of them told me that he was lured to take heroin, a kind of drug, when he was young. He has started to take illegal drugs ever since then and couldn’t stop. Now, he regretted doing this but it was too late. He was put into the sort of prison for drug addicts. He learnt to live without drugs. He wanted to start a new life.
Everyone, especially teenagers, must be clever and vigilant. We must stay away from drugs. Drugs can destroy our happy life and bright future.
