关于人教版高中英语新课标教材模块4第2单元 （关于袁隆平）  的几点商榷

  【以下小文系笔者曾2011年5月呈交人民教育出版社编辑部并供他们教科书修订参考的。兹贴出，供大家批评赐教。教育的目的之一应该是培养国民的批判性思维能力，诚望小文引起大家对一些教育产品的更多思考，而非被动接受被灌输的一切。】                             

   我偶然拜读到人教教科书第4模块第2单元，觉得有些事实性问题和语言问题，特此提出本人的一些疑惑，供您们参考。

该文涉及到一些数据，和其他来源矛盾或不一致。文章涉及到的主人公既然还健在，教科书编者似乎完全有条件从袁隆平院士那里获得第一手的背景资料。笔者未全面验证，只是发现一些商榷点而已，特此提出，供今后参考，或供编辑类似涉及到数据等事实性信息文章时参考。教科书是传承文化的重要工具，且我国国情和传统也将教科书几乎神圣化了，大众对教科书编写者提出了较高的期望。笔者曾提过人教教科书对地震题材处理的异议，这涉及到对人的关注问题（教科书也在潜意识地对全国广大师生进行安全教育），但似乎未见在修订中予以体现。课标人教版英文教科书似乎是目前我国使用最广泛的高中英文教科书，众多读者对教科书也提出了较高的期望。

◆1 袁隆平获得过博士学位吗？文章多处称呼袁隆平博士（Dr. Yuan, Dr. Yuan Longping,首次出现于第1段第4行） 他是博士生导师，但是他自己获得过博士学位么？百度百科和维基百科都没有提到袁隆平获得过博士学位（http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/袁隆平 http://baike.baidu.com/view/9239.htm ）。 网上一些英文资料有误，称呼了Dr. Yuan. 袁隆平1953年毕业于西南农学院农学系。从新华网 人民网等权威网站未查到他获得过博士学位。

◆2 短文第1段第5行： 关于产量增产数据问题： In 1974, he became the first agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has a high output. This special strain of rice makes it possible to produce one-third more of the crop in the same fields.  短文提到1974年袁隆平先生开发的稻种增产30%，这与一些权威媒体的报道不符，如“1973年实现了“三系”配套，第一个具有较强优势的杂交组合“南优2号”获得成功，并立刻显示了它的增产效应，亩产达到623公斤，单产一般比常规稻增产20%左右。”（人民网http://nc.people.com.cn/GB/61937/83788/83792/5754323.html  2011-5-18 ：世界杂交水稻之父袁隆平简历  2007年05月21日06:29 ）

◆3   1950年中国水稻产量问题：原文提到only 50 million tons(第2段 图片下面一行); 但是1950年我国水稻总产量一般报道的为5687万吨，这离课文中的5千万吨似乎有较大出入，为了显得严谨，是否可以写出确切的产量呢？

与此同时，稻谷总产量也由1950年时的5687万吨跃升至1995年的18250万吨。两相比较，水稻产量的增长速率要远远超过我国的人口增长速率。

◆4   第2段 图片下2行：These increased harvests mean that 22% of the world’s people are fed from just 7 % of the farmland in China.  此句意义？似乎存在问题。一个比例的问题，二是中国人的粮食不光是水稻，还有其他主粮。中国的耕地只占世界的7%，但是该句英文似乎不是表达是此意。 【似乎想表达：These increased harvests mean that 22% of the world’s people are fed from just 7 % of the world’s farmland./ It made possible the feeding of 22% of the world population on only 7% of the world's total arable land.】

背景资料：水稻是我国最重要的粮食作物，种植面积约占粮食作物总面积的30%，总产却占粮食总产的40%。（笔者未查证）

◆5   袁隆平先生的   梦

短文最后一段第2行提到袁隆平先生的梦，原文：Each ear of rice was as big as an ear of corn and each grain of rice was as huge as a peanut. (ear of rice ,ear of corn的可比性问题？) 描述的梦境和很多地方不符，如何以下英文（中国网）和中文信息不符合（长沙新闻网）。

◆6  语言问题（？）：“Struggle for his people for the past 5 decades”  中式英文之嫌？为人民奋斗了五十年？

Original sentence: His sunburnt face and arms and his slim, strong body are just like those of millions of Chinese farmers, for whom Mr Yuan Longping has struggled for the past five decades.

以下是笔者询问一位美国大学教授的一份邮件：

I doubt whether the usage of “struggled for the people” is idiomatic to your native speaker’s eyes. I looked up the phrase “struggle for” in Oxford Dictionary and some other dictionaries which seem not to justify the verb phrase “struggle for the people” or “struggle for one’s country”. Instead, the object of “struggle for” is usually something to be achieved such as struggle for independence, struggle for justice etc. ”.

对方回复说用法不妥当（似乎意犹未尽之感），建议修改为：He devoted his life to improving the lives of millions of Chineses farmers... 

◆     7  政治问题（？）：

短文最后一段倒数第3行：Now many years later, Dr Yuan has another dream: to export his rice so that it can be grown around the globe. One dream is not always enough, especially for a person who loves and cares for his people.

    从上下文分析，his people和 around the globe 发生联系，似乎不妥当？？？我认为his people似乎修改为 human beings更妥当.
