When you understand, karma dissolves.

Both my sisters sent me a diabolical plan to end high gas prices. Here it is:
Instead of a general boycott of gas stations, which would require throwing our cars away, or one of those one-day “buyer strikes” circulating the internet (where no one buys gas on a certain day, which hurts no one) the idea is to target one specific company, say Esso or Sunoco.

The simple idea is to not purchase any gas, any time, from this company. Start, say, on June 1, and continue. If everyone in North America stopped buying from this one company, they would face a choice: either lower their price to attract buyers, or go out of business.

If they lower their prices, other companies will have to follow suit. The brilliant part is, this would not hurt the consumer at all. It might make it a bit more inconvenient to gas up, but with all the other companies willing to sell, the driver is not left in the cold, and doesn’t have to deny himself/herself gas in order to hurt the company. If it does cause a bottle-neck in supplies, that will tend to lower world-wide oil prices.

The potential flaw: it would demand an unprecedented unity of consumers, an organization of purpose and timing – which is possible now with twitter, etc. It would also demand agreement on a “price level.” For example, it would do little good if the targeted company lowered their gas price by 5 cents, and everyone broke ranks and flooded to the targeted company to gas up. Within a week, the companies would be back in control. There would need to be a well-known price level. Say 75 cents per litre, or $ 3.00 a gallon – until the targeted company went to this level, no one would buy their gas. There would also need to be discipline and prior agreement to abandon the targeted company immediately if, after lowering their price for a day or two, they began to raise it again. Only a permanent reduction below the price ceiling would be acceptable. Once they lowered it, all other companies would be forced to lower, also.

It would be best to target an integrated oil company, one which also produces its own oil, rather than a refining company, to ensure the target has the capability to bring the gasoline on stream even at lowered prices. Less than ten years ago, oil was $ 12 a barrel, versus $ 112 now. In ten years, have your house or your wages increased by a similar 900 per cent? Oil companies can make money at far lower prices than exist today. By the way, a fellow named Philip Hollsworth is credited with this idea...

Scorpio - (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
