莫西干人是阿尔戈基安印第安人部落的一支，最初定居于哈得逊河流域一带。1609年，莫西干人首次和欧洲殖民者接触。1680年后，由于同荷兰和英国殖民者的冲突不断，大量莫西干人东迁到了马萨诸塞州的斯托克布里奇，在那里，他们被称为斯托克布里奇印第安人。斯托克布里奇印第安人允许基督教新教传教士同他们一起居住，这其中包括美国著名的哲学神学家Jonathan Edwards。这些传教士一直反对欧洲殖民者对莫西干人的剥削，致力于捍卫莫西干人的土地，部分传教士也因此遭到诬陷而被殖民政府不止一次的传唤审判。18世纪时期，斯托克布里奇印第安人在保留自己特有传统的同时有很多成为了基督教徒。19世纪20-30年代，大部分莫西干人后裔向西迁移定居于威斯康辛州东北部的印第安保留地。
1826年，美国作家詹姆斯·费尼莫尔·库伯（James Fenimore Cooper）的代表作《最后的莫西干人》（The Last Of The Mohicans）问世，尽管有评论者抨击其叙事方面的缺陷，小说仍成为了当时英国最流行的小说之一。小说自1920年以来被数次搬上银幕。1992年的同名改编电影由1989年的奥斯卡最佳男主角Daniel Day Lewis主演，以1757年英、法两大帝国在美洲争夺殖民地为背景，用殖民与反殖民，压迫与自由，殖民者与土著内部的斗争以及追求独立自由的白裔土著与殖民者之间的真情作为意韵内核，组织了并不复杂但感人至深的故事情节。影片的原声碟由知名作曲家Trevor Jones 和 Randy Edelman共同完成，兼具豪情气魄与柔情唯美，带给人们震撼和感动。
《Mohicans 莫希干人/莫希干精神》和《Mohicans Chapter 2 莫希干人2/莫希干精神2》由意大利厂牌EDEL于2003年制作发行，作曲家 Fabrizio Baldoni、Gino di Stefano 和 Paolo Re 希望用音乐来表现莫希干人那种神圣的宗教感和充满莫希干智慧的神秘传奇世界。豪放壮阔的气势铺陈由心发出的原始吟唱，这2张专辑以其独特的感染力在全球取得了巨大的成功。
