凡妮莎 出生在纽约一个教师家庭，在优裕的环境中长大。

    在高中就能歌善舞的她被认为很有希望登上百老汇舞台。赢得Syracuse大学的表演奖学金后，她前往纽约参加选美大赛，赢得了纽约小姐的头衔，后来又成为第一位黑人美国小姐，因为昔日的裸照被曝光，她被迫放弃了桂冠。许多人预言她在演艺之路走到了头，但凡妮莎接下来却在音乐界异军突起，发行了《The Comfort Zone》和《The Sweetest Days》等金曲专辑，

    并在电视剧和MV中亮相。90年代她重返影坛，拍摄了《亲爱的，你别骗我》（Another You）、《铁汉狂奔》（Marlboro Man），她与施瓦辛格联袂主演的1996年影片《蒸发密令》（Eraser）大获成功.  

    此后她又出演了影片《精神食粮》（Soul Food）和《杀戮战警》（Shaft）、百老汇音乐剧《Kiss of the Spider Woman》，以及多部电视剧。2006年，她成为ABC喜剧剧集《丑女贝蒂》（Ugly Betty）中的常驻演员，并获得2007年度 艾美奖 喜剧类最佳女配角提名。
