Chinese merchants were quick to take advantage of the security offered by Hong Kong’s foreign flag – for the colonial island escaped much of the turmoil that engulfed China in the 19th century.

It became a Hong Kong industry when the famous comprador Sir Robert Ho Tung established a silkfarm and factory in the New Territories, far from the traditional silk centres of China.

Rickshaw coolies were always in demand, hawker jostled for favoured stations on pavements and coolies worked long hours conveying the city’s merchandize from the harbour to city stores.
