哈代: 《身后》

    任何人逝世后, 熟悉和了解他（她）的人总会发表某种议论,那些看似平常的随意议论往往很能反映出逝者生前的关注点和道德品质，也能反映出人们对逝者的情感态度。今年清明节返乡扫墓祭祖时发现，有几位熟悉的面孔不见了,但常能听到乡亲门对逝者三言两语的议论。这使我想到了哈代的《身后》一诗。下面让我们读一读他的这首小诗，看看他想像中自己逝世后人们将会是怎样评议他的。

    哈代(1840-1928)，是跨世纪的伟大小说家和伟大诗人，他在一生中的创作生涯中，前三十年写了十四部小说和三个短篇，1897年以后的第二个三十年中写了八卷诗歌，是英国文学史上寥寥可数的在小说和诗歌两方面都卓有成就的伟大作家之一。哈代的初忠和末爱都是诗歌，他自己也喜欢人家称他为诗人。他诗歌里的抒情成分很浓，而且常带有戏剧成分；但是，他的诗和他大多数小说一样，字里行间常透露出一种悲观情绪。哈代的许多短诗，脍炙人口，越来越受读者欢迎。

Afterwards

When the Present has latched its postern behind my tremulous stay1

And the May month flaps its glad green leaves like wings

Delicate-filmed 2 as new-spun silk, will the neighbors say,

“He was a man who used to notice such things?”

 

If it be in the dusk when, like an eyelid’s soundless blink,

The dewfall-hawk3 comes crossing the shades to alight

Upon the wind-warped4 upland thorn, a gazer may think

“To him this must have been a familiar sight.”

 

If I pass during some nocturnal blackness, mothy and warm5,

When the hedgehog travels furtively over the lawn

One may say,“He strove that such innocent creatures should come to no harm,6

But he could do little for them; and now he is gone.”

    

If, when hearing that I have been stilled7 at last, they stand at the door

Watching the full-starred heavens that winter sees,

Will this thought rise on those who will meet my face no more,

“He was one who had an eye for such mysteries”?

 

And will any say when my bell of quittance8 is heard in the gloom,

And a crossing breeze cuts pause in its outrollings,9

Till they rise again, as they were10 a new bell’s boom,

“He hears it not now, but used to notice such things?”

当‘今世’之门在我颤抖人生之后关闭，

五月拍打着它那绿叶般的欢快羽翼，

纤柔飘渺如新织丝绸，邻居是否会说，

“他这个人过去总是留心这些东西”？

 

若在黄昏露降时候，像眼皮一眨那样，

苍鹰无声地掠过阴影，降落在高地

被风吹斜了的荆棘上，凝望者或许会想，

“他对这一切景像一定都很熟悉。”

 

我若在某个温暖的黑夜过逝，虫蛾飞舞，

刺猬偷偷摸摸穿过草地，有人可能论议，

“他曾经努力保护过这些无辜的小动物，

但是他也无能为力，如今他已离世。”

 

假如听说我终于安息，人们站在门口，

仰望冬夜布满星斗的天空，是否这种思想

会出现在那些再也见不到我的人们心头？——

“他这个人过去特别关注这些神秘的现像”

 

当人们在阴郁中听见我辞世的钟声，

一阵微风吹过，轰鸣的钟声遽然中止，

继而又响起像新的钟鸣，那时是否有人会说，一

“他现在听不到了，但过去他总会注意。”
