In China’s urbanization progress,urban planners, stand between the government and the people.On the one hand, they serve the power and capital that produce urban space; on the other hand, their professional achievements will have direct influence on the public benefit of the site. Thus the investigation on their achievements , working method, ideas and mechanism of development , could help us look into their social status. At the same time we can know operation mode and hidden problems in China’s urbanization from the technical perspective, and extend it to the power and the people.

Professionality will play a rode in communicating the government and the public: on the one hand , it reflects specific problem, provides professional suggestions to the government and optimizes its decision-making process , on the other hand, it analyses the urban problems to the public, explains the meaning of policies, and  predicts the direction of the city movement.

But what should be planning?

The aim of planning is to move toward a Harmonious Society: to the outside, it’s a Harmony with the world, to the inside, it’s a harmony within society. From “faster and better” we are moving to “better and faster”, and the approach to it is ----sustainable development.

In my opinion, planning does not mean removal, planning does not mean building new: planning actually includes “building the new ” together with “preserving the old” !

Planning should be jointly discussed and accomplished by the government , developers, planners and the people. Now the fact is, people are absent……Our media should do a better job in awaking their citizens. In a word,  planning is an issue of People’s arousal.
