即使现在，莫高窟的美依然是不可方物，被破坏之前的样子更是不可想象。遗憾的是经过内鬼和外贼的摧残，我们已经很难知道莫高窟本来的样子，只能通过一些黑白照片来管窥一斑。

第一，莫高窟的价值 敦煌莫高窟，又叫千佛洞，位于河西走廊。始建于十六国时期，经过隋唐五代宋元，历史修建1000多年，是世界上规模最大的佛教艺术地。由于达官贵人以及往来商贾的不断斥资供养，莫高窟的以长期不断的丰富，其雕塑、绘画、建筑、书法、音乐等等方面都有着卓越的价值。

第二，外国人的破坏 元代以后，莫高窟处于雪藏时期，知道晚晴光绪年间，被欧洲斯坦因、伯希和等人发现，他们对当时的莫高窟主事者王圆箓——一个贪婪无知的道士——进行贿赂，以答应为其修建道观之名，区区几百两银子买通王圆箓，打开一个又一个封藏的洞窟，一车一车拉走数以万计的敦煌文献、割走壁画、搬走佛像，莫高窟遭受有史以来最大的摧残。

然而，厄运并没有结束，俄罗斯、日本等地的奸商掮客也不断闻讯赶来分一杯羹，用胶带粘下壁画，凿掉佛像运走，而这一切只需要支付王圆箓一点银子就可以做到。

由于敦煌文物实在太多，强盗们在莫高窟攫取文物是挑选式的，就像逛菜市场一样，挑好的拿。这些宝贵文物现在很多陈列在大英博物馆以及法国国家博物馆，好的一点是这些东西虽然被拿走了，但是还看得到。还有一种破坏是无法弥补的。比如说1922年，莫高窟竟然鬼使神差般关押了数百名俄罗斯沙皇士兵，这些士兵在莫高窟里烟熏火燎，也破坏了很多壁画。

第三 自己人的破坏 除了外国人对莫高窟的破坏，也有中国人自己对莫高窟的破坏，比如那个道士王圆箓，可能是想把莫高窟变成一个他自己心仪的道观，他打通凿穿了很多洞窟，也“粉刷”了很多墙壁、修改了很多佛像。还有，据说张大千曾在敦煌临摹壁画多年，也曾揭掉不少壁画，张大千此举为不少人诟病。
