Alibaba Invites eBay For A Talk 亦敌亦友的阿里巴巴和eBay

Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma's invitation to Kobe Bryant to be a guest speaker last year at the company's annual summit of entrepreneurs surprised some people, the NBA star not being well known for his expertise on e-commerce. Ma asked Bryant to talk about his experience as a leader for the Los Angeles Lakers, which delighted the screaming fans at the event, but did little to clarify the parallels between playing professional basketball and running businesses in China.

This year Alibaba is hosting a guest speaker at the annual summit whose Internet industry credentials are clear--but who maybe even more of a surprise: John Donahoe, president and chief executive of eBay Inc. (EBAY). This year's summit, which takes place in September, will also feature California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a keynote speaker.

EBay was long Alibaba's arch-rival in the e-commerce business. Alibaba Group's Taobao unit overtook eBay's Chinese unit in large part by undercutting its commission fees, causing eBay to effectively withdraw from China in 2006--and there was a time when Alibaba executives, including Ma, weren't shy about calling public attention to their Silicon Valley rival's alleged shortcomings.

But, as the speaking engagement suggests, the two companies lately have been acting in some ways more like partners than rivals, with Ma having visited eBay's headquarters in San Jose last year and Alibaba.com's wholesale e-commerce site, AliExpress, now accepting payments from eBay's PayPal. Alibaba and eBay now say they can work together and compete with each other simultaneously.

All this camaraderie might lead one to wonder what could be next for the erstwhile nemeses (Alibaba wouldn't say whether any further tie-ups might be in the works). Perhaps Donahoe's speech will hold a clue.
