The Story of Phoenix （凤凰的故事）（英文版本）

Back in the faraway land of ancient China
There lived a couple
A happy couple
The woman’s name was Feng
The man’s name was Huang
When they were together
They were called Feng-Huang
Or Phoenix in English
Feng-Huang were warmhearted
Treating people in their village nice and kind
Huang was a hunter
Whenever he caught something
Whatever it was
Big or small
They always cut it into pieces
Shared with people in great need
One year
The sunlight was so strong
The scorching hot weather killed plants and animals
No more animals could be caught
No more food could be found
People were dying of hunger
Feng-Huang were very anxious
Huang walked over every mountain
Trying to catch something
While Feng was home
Trying to save people who were dying
A tree grew in front of their house
With the name Worry-Free Little Tree
On the tree lived a crow couple named
Nearsighted and Narrow-minded
One night
They perched on the tree
Yelling at Feng-Huang
“Huang, Huang
A goat has been killed by a wolf named Lang
Right now Lang is not around
Hurry, hurry
Go get the goat back from the valley
You have meat
We get intestines
Remember to hang the intestines on the tree
Do you agree?”
Feng-Huang were very excited and happy
They answered
“Yes! Yes! We do!
Yes! Yes! We do!”
Immediately Huang ran to the valley
And took back the goat
They cut the goat into pieces
Gave them to people who were dying
And saved many lives
Feng-Huang were so busy and excited
They forgot to put the intestines on the tree
Actually the intestines were already consumed
The crows, Nearsighted and Narrow-minded, were very angry
They decided to punish Feng-Huang
Another night
They yelled the same thing
“Huang, Huang
A goat has been killed by a wolf named Lang
Lang is not around
Hurry, hurry
Go get the goat back from the valley
You have meat
We get intestines
Remember to hang the intestines on the tree
Do you agree?”
Again
Feng-Huang were very excited and happy
They answered
“Yes! Yes! We do!
Yes! Yes! We do!”
Huang went to the valley
Without his sword, bow, and arrows
The wolf Lang and his family were waiting for Huang
Grinding teeth with hatred
They jumped at Huang
Trying to kill and eat him
At that same moment
A beautiful angel appeared in the sky and spoke loudly
“Get lost, you bad wolves!”
The wolves ran away in panic
Huang was saved
The angel looked at Huang and said
“I heard of your good deeds
To award you and help you
I will give you a gift
From now on
You will be able to understand the language of birds
But remember
Nothing comes without a price
You can share the information with your beloved wife
But not anybody else
Otherwise
You will solidify into a cold stone
If your loved one tells other people the information
She will face the same punishment
Do you understand?”
Huang was very delighted beyond measure
“That’s wonderful!
By understanding the bird language
I will be able to find more food for my fellow villagers!
As long as they live happily
I am willing to accept any punishment!”
After thinking carefully
He accepted this special gift
After that day
He understood every single word of the birds
And could find and catch food for his village people
He told Feng he could understand the language of birds
Without ever mentioning the price
Feng hugged Huang, her husband
“I am so proud of you
And I love you!
My sweetheart
You are my hero!”
Thanks to Feng-Huang
People survived the harsh climate
And started to live in peace and happiness
Feng-Huang could relax a little bit
They discussed the possibility of having a baby
One day
Huang was hunting in the forest
When he heard two birds saying
“Hurry, Hurry!
We birds have to fly right away
The mountain will destroyed
By an unseen raging fire
Everything will be burned into ashes!”
Huang was startled at what he heard
He rushed home and
Told his wife this alarming news
Feng said
“Let’s tell everybody
And have them immediately vacate and flee away.”
Huang stopped her
“No! No!
You speak no word at all!
I will go tell them
You first go with them
Take good care of children and seniors
And yourself
I will catch up and meet you on the way
Remember
Do not mention one word about the fire at all!
Do you understand?
Promise me!”
Feng nodded and said
“I promise!”
Although she did not understand at all
Huang walked out of the door
At the doorstep
He turned his head and looked passionately
At his beautiful beloved wife
Tears were shining in his eyes
He ran to the top of a hill
Yelling loudly
“Everybody
Hurry and run!
Run for your lives!
The mountain will be on fire
Everything will be burned into ashes!”
At the beginning
People did not believe him
They were even laughing at him
“Dear Huang
Are you okay?
The sky is so blue
The wind is so tender
Where does the fire come from?
Ha-ha!”
Later on when they saw the tears in Huang’s eyes
They did not laugh anymore and agreed to go
They loved Huang
Respected him
Trusted him
When they walked past him
Everybody
Young and old
Thanked him and said
“We will be waiting for you on the road!”
Huang waved his hands
Gradually
His hands slowly turned into stone and froze up there
In the air
Then his head and his torso
Started to solidify
Two drops of tears also froze in his eyes
The giant fire started on the mountain
Marched quickly to the village
Trees and grasses were burned into ashes within no time!
Feng comforted everybody
After awhile, she still could not see her husband coming
She turned back to the village and found Huang
On the top of the hill
At that moment
Huang was almost a stone
Feng cried, overwhelmed with sorrow
“Honey,
What had happened?
Why didn’t you tell me?
You know I love you
You know I won’t let you go!
You know I can’t live without you
At all
Anymore!”
Feng hugged Huang very tight
Huang managed to make some sounds with his last breath
“Honey, go, go!
Quickly
I am becoming a stone
A cold stone
That’s the price I have to pay
You go and live happily
That’s my last and only wish!”
Tears in Huang’s eyes dropped down
Broken into pieces on the ground
But Feng would not go
“No! You have helped people all the time
Now you are turned into a stone
You are dying
It’s unfair!
It’s not fair at all!
I am not going anywhere
We promised each other that we would be together forever
For the rest of our lives!
And we will have a baby or two
We will have a big happy family!
Don’t you remember?
Don’t you remember!”
She kissed her husband
A cold stone
Fire swept by
Encircling Feng and Huang
Later on
A pair of birds flew
Out of the red and hot fire
With colorful feathers
This pair of beautiful birds flew high up into the sky
Happily and peacefully
Their names were Feng-Huang
People also call them Phoenix
