It's vaguely like Mac OS X's Dashboard, Vista's Sidebar, and Yahoo's Widgets, except that it works everywhere: OS X, Solaris, Linux, Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, ...). Anywhere Java runs. It also lets you use all the Java APIs: 3D, networking, all of it... Very cool.
