为了提高美国学生的外语能力以适应经济全球化的需要,美国政府制订了国家级课程标准(Standards
for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st
Century,1996年初版,1999年再版。以下简称《标准》)。该《标准》将美国21世纪的外语学习目标归纳为5个以字母C开头的单词,即:Communication(语言交流),Cultures(文化沟通),Connections
(相关知识),Comparisons (比较能力) 和 Communities
(社团活动),也是《标准》的核心内容。《标准》的出台不仅推动了美国外语教育的改革,而且对我国现阶段的外语教育改革,特别是对我们的英语课堂教育有着巨大的借鉴和启示作用。
