中英文书名翻译浅析

中文和英文由于语言结构及使用者阅读习惯的差异，反映在书名中也很明显。由于中文名词可以修饰名词，所以书名可以很长。一个正书名可以很长，所以往往不用副书名也能说明图书的内容。英文中由于不习惯用名词修饰名词，尤其是一个接一个的名词修饰名词，所以国外英文书往往再加一个副书名说明补充书的内容。
虽然中文和英文书名结构不一样，但是作用都是一样的，那就是对内容起到画龙点睛的作用，使读者一眼就能知道书的内容。只不过在翻译的时候，要注意中文书名和英文书名的这个差别。在中文书名翻译成英文书名的时候，如果书名过长，不妨在英译中加个副书名。笔者从亚马逊网站上随意抽取了60余本英文书，有副书名的占到70%以上。这一比例远远高于我们国内的中文图书。而在英文书名翻译成中文书名的时候，不妨把副书名融合进正书名，以更符合中文读者阅读的习惯。
英文书名中正书名和副书名之间往往有个冒号，只有极少数是用括号把副书名括起来。我们中文的书名中正书名和副书名之间不少用破折号的。笔者认为既然标点符号是引进的西方的东西，不妨正书名和副书名之间也参照英文书名表示习惯，使用冒号。另外需要说的一点是，英文书名出现在封面上的时候，正书名和副书名之间的冒号就不用了，而是用不同的字体来区分正书名和副书名。笔者见到不少的中文书名和副书名之间的破折号出现在封面上，其实是可以不用的，因为破折号出现在封面上往往会破坏封面的美观。
