Hello everyone. Today I am glad to introduce the novel gone with the wind to you. First I will give you a brief introduction to the author. Margaret Mitchell was the American author, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for her immensely successful novel, Gone with the Wind, which was published in 1936. The novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more copies than any other hard-cover book, apart from the Bible, and is reputed to be still selling at 200,000 copies a year. An American film adaptation, released in 1939, became the highest-grossing film in the history of Hollywood, and received a record-breaking number of Academy Awards. Well, let me present gone with the wind to you. It was Old South, which is no more than a dream remembered today. People were once there, living with the high strong slaves' songs in the quarters in security, peace and eternity. Scarlett spent her young maiden years at Tara Manor. She was well disciplined by her mother, but in fact she was capricious. She dreamed to marry the son of another manor Ashley Wilkes. But Ashley, the man she had wanted for so long, chose to marry Charles’ cousin, Melanie. Because of envy, she married Charles first. Soon, the Civil War was broken in the United States. Ashley and Charles joined the war. But Charles died in this war. Scarlett became a widow and she still loved Ashley. One day at a ball of charity sales, Scarlett met Rhett Butler. Rhett began to pursue Scarlett, but she refused. In the war, the south army of the United States failed, so there were a lot of wounded soldiers in Atlanta. Scarlett and Melanie volunteered to be a nurse to take care of the soldiers. Witnessing the horrors of war, Scarlett became mature. At this time, many people ran away from their homes and Scarlett’s mother and two little sisters got ill. So she wanted to go back to Tara Manor desperately. But Melanie would give birth, therefore Scarlett couldn’t leave to look after her. Soon the north army got there. Scarlett asked Rhett to take Melanie and herself back to Tara Manor. At half-way, Rhett kissed goodbye to Scarlett and left her a gun because he wanted to help the south army. After getting home, Scarlett found her home had been ransacked and her mother had died and her father was in mental disorder. Shortly the war ended. The new ruler demanded the owner of manor pay heavy taxes, so Scarlett was force to borrow money from Rhett. But he was in prison. On her way home, Scarlett met Frank who would marry her little sister. In order to rebuild her home, she cheated Frank and married him, while Rhett was released because of bribery. And then Scarlett met across Rhett. Frank and Ashley joined in an anti-government organization. Then Frank died and Ashley was hit because their secret meeting was found by the north army. So Scarlett became a widow again. This time Rhett helped her and proposed to her. She married him then and they lived in a luxurious house. After a year, their daughter Bonnie was born. Rhett discovered Scarlett still liked Ashley, and it resulted in their emotional breakdown. When Scarlett told Rhett she was pregnant again, Rhett suspected if it was his own child. Scarlett was very angry and she wanted to fight with him. But unfortunately she fell off the stair and miscarried. Soon their daughter fell off the horse when they were talking. Meantime, Melanie was overwork to death. Before dying she asked Scarlett to look after Ashley and their son. Scarlett embraced Ashley tightly and Rhett couldn’t bear it and left. Facing heart-struck Ashley, Scarlett understood she really needed Rhett. But it was too late. Finally abandoned Scarlett decided to recreate her life and wish a fine day. I think you should know valuing the people who you really love. And we should learn her perseverance. When you meet some things, you needn’t scare. We must learn how to be a strong person who never hopeless and struggle with the cruel society bravely.
