"Silence may be golden, but it could be killing your company."
Silence is not only
ubiquitous and expected in organizations but also extremely costly
to both the firm and the individual."Silence can exact a high
psychological price on individuals, generating feetings of
humiliation,pornicious anger,resentment and the like that,if
unexpressed contaminate every interaction shut down creativity and
undermine productivity."
Silence often starts when
we choose not to confront a difference--be it of opinion, beliefs,or
tactes--or dismiss that difference.Take the Web-management
compating, never noticing that when cuny manager dissented a
colleague would quickly reject their idea. The professors also urge
you to recognize your own power to bring issues into the open, even
with superiors. To break the walls of silence, sometimes you must act
inappropriately--for example,by asking tough questionsat a company
meeting.
All great failures in
professional life stem prom failures in conversation, particularly
in critical moments.Good conversation happens when people exhibit
four core practices:truly listening and providing a field of space
where ideas can emerge;respecting and recognizing the legitimacy of
another's point of view;suspending our judgment and certainty about
what another person should do;and speaking your truth regardless of
other influences. The most important is learning to listen. To listen
is to develop an inner silence. And that silence can be
golden.
