本片根据百老汇的长篇音乐剧改编而成。本片的票房收入达2500万美元，是迄今为止由好莱坞制作的较为成功的音乐喜剧片。
　　
    贫困的送奶工人特伊（以色列男演员托普饰）生活在一个乌克兰族的犹太人居住区，在那里，他不得不忍受来自非犹太居民的歧视；五个女儿理不清的感情纠葛也让他操碎了心。特伊常常不堪生活重压，却无法从妻子格特（诺玛．科恩饰）那里得到丝毫慰藉，为排解苦闷，他更愿意向上帝倾述衷肠。
　　
    特伊一心想把大女儿特拉嫁给有钱的屠夫拉查．沃夫，然而，事与愿违，特拉却爱上了穷裁缝默特．卡姆佐（里奥纳多．弗雷饰），此时的特伊不得不为女儿另做打算。特伊认为自己要比那些整天骑在他头上的非犹太人大宽容得多，可最终还是不能接受另一个女儿夏娃决定和非犹太人菲得卡结婚的想法。当他和邻居被沙皇的手下从居住地强行赶走后，一向循规蹈矩的特伊这才意识到必须改变过去的处世哲学，重新开始生活。

Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Fiddler on the Roof (Collector’s Edition) for 23rd January 2007 priced at $26.98 SRP. Norman Jewison’s Fiddler on the Roof is a universal story of hope, love and acceptance, and is once again coming to R1 DVD as a two-disc special edition.
