Rich Democracy
Poor Media
1. What are the social functions of journalism?
The roles of the media in a
democratic society include holding people in power accountable for
their actions; offering the public a diversity of opinion; and fact
checking so that the people have accurate information on which to
base their decisions.
The correct response(s): Holding people in power accountable for their actions; offering the public a diversity of opinion, and fact checking.
The correct response(s): Holding people in power accountable for their actions; offering the public a diversity of opinion, and fact checking.
2.What
are the problems with the concentration of the media?
One of the problems is that the media
owners ARE the people in power. Often they have their own political
and economic agendas, and as media ownership comes to be
concentrated in the hands of a few individuals and corporations we
experience a loss of diversity of opinion. Finally, fact checking
is expensive and corporate owned media often place profits ahead of
the public interest when deciding what to cover the news and how to
cover it.
The correct response(s): Media owners ARE the people in power,
there is a loss of diversity of opinion, and fact checking is
expensive
3.Why do media companies focus on entertainment and sensational news?
The corporate media tend to produce
"infotainment" and sensationalized news because it is cheaper to
produce, and thus more profitable. Real journalism, which often
involves investigative reporting, and risks alienating the wealthy
and powerful in society, is frequently deemed too expensive to
produce and detrimental to the bottom line.
The correct response(s): Because it is cheaper to produce, and thus more profitable.
