The middle finger has no inherent meaning. Show the finger to a
child or someone not socialized in the United States, and you will
get little response. The middle finger is only seen as a part of
the hand, nothing more. But in the United States, we give this
finger meaning. The idea of the finger as "rude gesture" exists
within our culture then we continue to give the finger meaning
through interaction. When you display this finger to someone else,
you know the response you to want to create, and when it is
created, we perpetuate the social meaning of the middle
finger. That is, we socially construct the idea
of the middle finger as a rude gesture.
