简评雪莱和拜伦的诗歌
这是我最近写的一个小作业,不仅得了满分,老师还鼓励我说这是本周的范文。我贴来看看,欢迎文学和英文爱好者切磋讨论
1A. One of the concerns of Shelley is mutability. Briefly what do you see him saying about this concept in the poem of that name and also in his poem “Ozymandias.”
In the poem"mutability", Shelley uses two similes to describe the
human beings as clouds and lyres, respectively. In his view related
to nature, clouds can not last forever no matter how radiant they
are in the darkness. When clouds are lost, they are lost forever.
Shelley also uses a musical instrument called lyres to show us the
similar concept. The musical instrument cannot give us the constant
sounds, namely, different blasts produces different sound. In other
words, the musical sounds released from the musical instrument are
constantly changed, depending on who is the player. Shelley also
feels that our thoughts are not constant, either, because our
thoughts are "wandering". The theme of this poem is mutability
which indicates that everything keeps changing in the world.
In his other poem “Ozymandias”, Shelley uses different approach to
show the mutability. In this poem, the first person narrator meets
a traveler from an antique land, who shows him a broken stone
statue. In the historical view of this traveler, the King named
Ozymandias can not last forever, although the facial image of this
dead King is curved in the stone statue. No matter how vivid the
"frown", and "winkled lip" of Ozymandias are kept in this statue,
the King is "lifeless" and he is gone. From a historical view,
Shelley feels that nothing, including the King, can last forever.
Life is changed into "nothing beside remains", which is another
kind of mutability.
1C. From the first canto of Chide Harold, briefly describe the
character of a Byronic hero.
The Byronic hero is a young man who is born in England (Stanza 2,
line 10). Although he takes delight in virtues ways, he behaves
really wildly (Stanza 2, lines 11-12). He is a shameless person
(Stanza 2, line 14) and enjoys ungodly time (Stanza 2, line 15). He
does not care too much about the earthly things( Stanza 2, line
16). However, he seems to have friends who love drinking wine
(Stanza 2, line 18). This young man's name is Childe Harold (Stanza
3, line 19) who performs evil deeds or crime (Stanza 3, line 27).
It seems that he loves sunshine and enjoys the outdoor time (Stanza
4, lines 28-29). After he has a miserable life experience, he feels
that his native land is more lone than hermit's place (Stanza 4,
lines 31-36). Although he lives with sins, he is not willing to
make atonement (Stanza 5, lines 137-38). It seems that his love can
focus on one woman whom he loves the most ( Stanza 5, line 39) and
his emotion can be disturbed by losing this woman (Stanza 5, line
45). He is a young man who can be hurt in his heart (Stanza 6, line
46). However, he has a strong pride which does not allow his tears
to be seen by others ( Stanza 6, lines 48-49). It seems that he
likes to escape from the sad reality by leaving his native land to
find a new direction(Stanza 6, lines 50-51).
