Ben
Carson的个人自传以后,挑出一个促使他成功的原因之一,并用三个例子具体说明这个成功的原因。小宝的作文如下,这只是初稿。写好作文后小宝做了几十个俯卧撑补充缺席的体操课.
BEN CARSON GIFTED HANDS:
GOD
Ben Carson was a talented neurosurgeon who had “gifted hands”,
and one of the things in his THINK BIG rules was to “Never get too
big for God. Never drop God out of your life (Chapter 22,
page 218)”. God was important in Ben’s life, and he learned
to depend on God when he had troubles. God is someone who can help
people like Ben indirectly, and he is also unseen to the human eye.
He does things that people can’t see, mostly to help. Carson is
very thankful for God, so much, that he included him in his THINK
BIG rules.
An incident that involved God in Ben’s life happened when he was a
young adolescent at the age of 14. He had a terribly bad temper
back then and he would become angry for no logical reason. At that
time he and his friend Bob were listening to a transistor radio.
Ben and Bob were arguing about what station to play and were
fighting for the dial. Suddenly, Ben reached for
the camping knife in his back pocket and tried to stab Bob.
Luckily, Bob survived due to his ROTC buckle.
Ashamed, Ben ran home and cried for two hours. Once Ben stopped, he
prayed to God to take away his temper. He reached for a Bible, and
found verses about how angry people aren’t as successful others.
Ben pulled himself together, got out of the bathroom and finally
became at peace with his mind. Based on this experience, God became
important to Ben because he helped take away his temper by making
him realize his temper is allowing people to control him. From that
day on, Ben’s faith in God became stronger and now whenever people
try to make Ben mad, he simply laughs it off. (Chapter 6,
pages 53-57).
Another experience that strengthened Carson’s faith
in God happened when he was in college at Yale University. At Yale,
Ben struggled mostly in one class in particular, and that class was
chemistry. At the end of the first semester, there were final
examinations, and Ben was nowhere near being ready for it. He had
terrible studying skills. On the night before the exam, Ben studied
endlessly but to no avail. When he slept that night, he had a dream
where he was in the chemistry lecture hall with an unearthly being
who wrote down chemistry formulas. Once Ben awoke, he copied down
those formulas, studied them, and went to the lecture hall. The
professor gave out the tests and Ben went through the
almost-identical problems in his dream very quick. He happily
thought it was a miracle. This experience strengthened his faith in
God because he realized that God forgave him for his past studying
mistakes and instead of punishing him, rewarded him. Ben was
convinced that God actually wanted him to be a doctor and had good
things planned for him. This incident taught Ben the importance of
faith and trust in God. (Chapter 8, pages 71-76)
Finally, another incident happened when Ben, now a neurosurgeon,
was going to operate on Craig Warnick, the husband of Nurse Susan
Warnick. Craig over the years developed many tumors throughout his
body that affected his health greatly. It wasn’t until later he
learned that he had Von-Hippel-Lindau, a rare disease that causes
many tumors in your body. One day, Carson found out that Craig
developed another tumor in his brain stem. Eventually, Ben decided
to operate on Craig. Before the surgery, Ben, Susan, and Craig
prayed for the surgery to be a success. The surgery finally
started. It was difficult to operate on Craig
since he had many abnormal blood vessels that blocked Ben’s view of
the tumor. He didn’t finish taking out the tumorous growth the
first time but he tried again, and although it was difficult, he
prayed to God again to guide him. Carson did eventually pull out
the tumor through the hole in Craig’s brain stem. The next
afternoon, Ben saw that Craig was doing well and was even cracking
jokes. He realized that God created a miracle again and had rescued
Craig. Craig has since then progressed nicely. Based on this
incident, God was important to Ben because he helped prevent more
damage from being done by guiding Ben’s “gifted hands” to remove
the tumor. Ben, Susan, and Craig were all happy with the outcome.
As a strong Christian, Ben learned a lot from all of these
incidents. (Chapter 18)
I chose the THINK BIG topic “God” because God helped Ben reach his
goals and become successful. God is also important in my family’s
lives. I believe that God helped Ben in his life and has made him a
better person. Ben had many learning experiences with God and this
also gave him more knowledge. For example, after Ben tried to stab
his friend, he looked at the Bible and learned that being angry
won’t help; it will only give power to those who anger you
(Chapter 6, pages 53-57). Another example is when Carson
takes an extremely hard psychology quiz. Many students leave,
pretending they hadn’t read the notice, but Ben stays and prays for
help from God. Eventually, he is the only student
left in the room. Suddenly, the professor and a photographer for
the Yale Daily News burst in, saying that Carson is the most honest
person in the class. I think God helped Ben in his life because the
experience God gave Ben made him realize that if he leaves things
in God’s hands, he will be fine. He also learned to be honest.
(Chapter 9, pages 86-87)
God also affects my life. He could make me a better person overall.
Some ways he could include making me honest, smart, and helpful.
For example, if I am at school and I see somebody who dropped their
books, I could maybe pick them up. This is being helpful. Another
thing I could do is the next time I have a big quiz I should study
more to be prepared. Finally, if I mess up for something and
someone else gets blamed, I can maybe be honest by saying it was
actually me. God is somebody you can always depend on, and if Ben
Carson can, everybody can.
