老师要求：List the top ten movies this week, or top ten bestsellers on Amazon.com (children’s or adults), or top ten television shows by popularity, or the last ten books you read outside of school. Assign each title to a genre, using the charts on CHCL pp102-107. Summarize your findings: how many were fiction—fantasy--traditional tales—poetry--nonfiction? 

 

我的回答：

After I reviewed the list of the top 10 Children books on Amazon.com, I was surprised to realize that Fantasy/Science Fiction books holds the majority of the list.  Among these top ten books, eight books are in the genre of Fantasy/Science Fiction, one is in the genre of Traditional Tales/Myth and one is in the genre of Fictional Genres/Come-of-Age/Family Stories.

 

On Amazon.com, three writers stand out for their books on science fiction.  Lois Lowry whose books ( The Giver series) are listed at 1,4,7, and 9 out of top 10 books.  James Dashner whose books (Maze Runner ) are listed at 2,5, and 10 out of top 10 books. Suzanne Collins whose book (Hunger Games) is listed at 8 out of top 10 books.

 

After I reviewed the top 10 movies this week, I realized that the movie adapted from the top one Children book “ The Giver”  was at top seven in the movie list of this week. This suggests to me that the genre of Science Fiction is very popular for both Children books and movies in these days.

 

Based on the above observation, it is not surprising to me that my favorite readings are so different from the top 10 Children books on Amazon.com.  Right now, I am still interested in reading classical literature books (fiction, poems and biography). When I suggest  my son to read classical literature books, he often refuses my recommendation. Now I understand why this could happen. The top 10 Children books suggest that today’s children enjoy reading science fiction more than classical literature books. Indeed my son really enjoys reading The Hunger Game more than The Treasure Island.
