I stood at the Karu marker

where often she had gone,

and listened,

but could not even hear

the voices of the birds

that cry on Unebi Mountain…

I could do nothing

but call my wife’s name

And wave my sleeves.

Title:    Poem by Kakinomoto Hitomaro as He Shed Tears of Blood in His Grief Following the Death of His Wife

Author: Kakinomoto Hitomaro

Significance:

This poem creates a strong emotion for a husband (poet) who misses his wife very much after her death.  He goes to the market, a place where his wife often goes when she is alive, to recall the old days. But since his wife is dead and he cannot find her trace here. He is so attached to his wife that he even ignores the bird cries. His waving sleeves creates an lonely  and empty image, which makes readers sense how sad the husband is.
