拉迪亚德·吉卜林（Rudyard Kipling），1865—1936，英国小说家、诗人，出生于印度孟买。父亲曾是孟买艺术学校教师，后任拉合尔艺术学校校长和博物馆馆长。吉卜林6岁时被送回英国受教育，17岁中学毕业返回印度，父亲为他在拉合尔找了份工作，担任拉合尔市《军民报》副编辑。由于工作关系，他游篇印度的风土人情以及英国殖民者在印度的生活有相当透彻的了解。
他于1907年获得诺贝尔文学奖，成为英国第一位获此奖的作家。
《如果》简介
《如果》是一首相当励志的诗，曾被译成27国语言作为学习的教材，许多人，特别是青少年常以此勉励自己，激发前进动力。
芸芸众生，谁不想成功，谁不想令世人瞩目，诗人在诗中展示了成功背后，包含多少辛酸，经历多少磨难，忍受多少痛楚。有道是“天将降大任于斯人也，必先苦其心志，劳其筋骨”。“如果”我们能正视成功前的种种困难，勇于接受挑战；失败了，何畏惧，重头再来，何愁成功不光顾你，世界不属于你呢？更重要的是，你是个顶天立地的人。
如今， 拉迪亚德的《如果》成了迈克杰克逊的墓志铭。

If you can keep your head when all about
you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt
you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by
waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too
wise;
