Modern Odyssey

            A man is on his way home from the war in Iraq. His wife, children, and mother are at home in the United States waiting for him. On the way home his plane runs out of fuel and he and his men crash into Africa. His men die, but he miraculously survives, although seriously injured. He is close to dying but is nursed back to health by an African woman. This woman’s husband is suspicious and jealous of the man’s friendship with the woman, so he sends him out of the community. He travels on foot to the west coast of the continent. He goes to the shore and with the help of an American missionary he is to be taken home to the United States by ship. The night that they travel, a massive storm occurs and the ship is capsized. The two survive and drift to a small, unmapped island. He borrows the missionary’s cell phone and tries to call his family but finds that there is no service on the island. They spend the night there but find in the morning the island is inhabited by cannibals. The missionary is tragically killed and eaten, but the man survives. Finding a hollow log, he boats to the Bahamas. He sneaks onto a cruise ship and sails to Florida, and he always hides in the maid’s cabin.  The boat eventually makes its way to Maine and it docks. He walks back home and finds his family, but they barely recognize the man. They test him on the place he and his wife honeymooned and passed. His family welcomes him and they are reunited.
