Should graduate students have examines?
Doctoral and masters candidates might be the maturest students in the education system. They are rational and brilliant; they know exactly what they will obtain through the courses they take. It seems that exam is totally superfluous for them, but the fact is on the contrary, examination is still essential in graduate university.
First of all, the resources in our education system is limited, there are far more studying students than teaching professors in university. As a result professors impart knowledge by giving lectures but not through discussion with the audiences. It’s hard for the teachers to know what students have acquired after all. Since it is easy to cheat in the homework but not that easy in a test, examination seems to be the best choice for a professor to find out the effects of his lectures and make necessary improvement in the next year.
Besides that, exam is valuable for students. Although they are wise enough to choose the most useful information passing through the speech, the teacher is absolutely the one with the best understanding of the subject. Students will gain the marrow of the class under the guidance of the teacher, especially when preparing for the final and even when answering the paper.
Examination works for the university administrators, too. They need something to charge the students’ performances, and then confer scholarships and even the degrees. Since every student has to accomplish the paper independently in fixed time, exams perhaps is the fairest mode ever exists.
It’s feasible that better ways for examing graduate students’ studies come into being. However, examination is necessary for doctoral and masters candidates as professor, school, and even students themselves benefit from it.
