前几天忙得鸡飞狗跳,赶场参加 “中国新独立电影”活动。
该活动的全称是On the Edge: New Independent Cinema from China,于4月13-15号在哥大和The Film Society of Lincoln Center举行。一堆朋友欧阳江河、北岛、刘禾、李陀、翟永明等参与了策划。
可能正因为多有诗人参与策划吧,一个有趣现象是:从国内来参加的人员中除了五个导演、几个艺术家外,诗人占了大多数——欧阳江河、翟永明、王寅、赵野、唐晓渡、陈超等,和从外州来的北岛(印第安那大学执教),再加上在纽约的牛鬼蛇神:张真(纽约大学教电影研究)、西川(纽约大学短期讲学)、周瓒(在哥大访问)等等——整一个浩浩荡荡的诗歌别动队!
当然,除了演出、诗朗诵等一系列派生活动外,本活动的中心内容是看五部电影并和五个导演讨论:
贾樟柯《世界》(可惜《三峡好人》还没在北美发行,尚不能公映,这月底纽约
韩杰《赖小子》
李杨《盲井》
王超《安阳婴儿》
万玛才旦《静静的嘛呢石》
贾樟柯的《世界》已经是经典片了,这里不再多说。贾樟柯在口头阐述观点上也非常到位、令人信服,也不表。这里想提一点是:我这次才知道该电影其实有两个版本——国际长版片长138分钟,国内短版108分钟。怪不得前不久在哥大给我的学生放了一个网上下的《世界》,当时就感觉和几年前在林肯中心看的电影明显不同,我还以为是网上下载的不光丢掉了分辨率,还丢掉了很多片段呢,原来下载的根本就是个国内短版!关于两版本的区别,郑隆福有非常细心的观察,我凭个人亲身经验完全赞同他的观点:“贾樟柯电影作品《世界》两个版本的比较”(另欧阳江河编的《今天》“中国独立电影专辑”很值得一看)。
韩杰近来一直任贾樟柯的副导演,《赖小子》是他第一部自己编导的作品(贾樟柯监制)。该电影显然深受贾樟柯的影响,但贾的电影相比更显得舒缓、严整、粗砺之下其实满怀了柔情和诗意,而《赖小子》在赖、狠、绝望到不留任何余地上更上了一层楼!丫才三十出头,就如此生猛,以后的发展真是不可估量啊。
我原先听说李杨的《盲井》,是不停地有国际国内友人力推我去看。他(她)们的理由除了该电影确实是个好电影外,更主要是说里面的男主角(就是《天下无贼》演傻根那个)长得和我就象孪兄弟。我两年前终于看了,确实是部好电影(除了我对过于戏剧化的结尾有所保留),而那小弟确实象我!这次活动中关于该电影印象最深的是李杨说他们在山西一煤井里拍《盲井》,拍好刚出地面不久,那煤井就塌了,还死了人…
可惜,这次没赶上王超的《安阳婴儿》,但王超的言论震动了我。他说他几年来连续任陈凯歌的副导演、忙着拍《刺秦》等“超现实”片子的同时,清楚地看到身边社会发生的大转变,家乡工人、以前的同学们开始大规模下岗失业…他终于对陈凯歌说他要去拍不同的电影了…
这次活动赶场中最没料到的收获是看到万玛才旦的《静静的嘛呢石》。该电影实在是个精妙之作!叙事、场景、对话、镜头、光线等都细腻、纯粹、又朴素到很高境界,各种细节元素间又满布张力…(可惜讽刺的是,一来该电影太过细腻,二来本人那晚实在太累,俺居然在放映厅中小打了几个瞌睡,醒来拼命自责。等下次弄到DVD,泡杯浓茶先,再细细品尝!)总之,强力推荐!

Generation电影节。那次活动极其敏锐地把握了1990年代后期新一代描绘城市生活的导演们开始迅速崛起的历史瞬间。可惜今天该活动的官方网页已经消失了,我们一帮当时在纽约学习、工作的“建筑同志”们(注:Archicomrades跟同性恋无关)办的华筑网里的介绍尚可供参考:“都市的一代”:变化中的中国电影 。当然最重要的,张真编的论文集The Urban

在那次电影节中,我们一帮热血Archicomrades第一次看到贾樟柯的《小武》和《站台》,大受震动,还在网上展开了热烈讨论。现在再回头读读其中一些文字吧:

Actually it became the most touching film I've seen this year even there was very little emotional display there. I feel it like physically my hometown and psychologically my Utopia where I feel sympathetic and deeply happy -朱涛
I liked Xiao Wu. For me, it is the power of this roughness of real life most interesting. It tries to give a real face of the life. Therefore it's a bit depressing (for me, it looks fun as well, like what tao feels.)
It seems that the film doesn't have (maybe doesn't want to) a deliberate design and jia zhangke doesn't show an artful skill in filmmaking. It seems that the movie is not intended to be a work of art in a conventional sense, but for me this authentic way of narrative has its own beauty -华黎
... a movie like xiao wu sets up a way to, on one hand, crush the pretentious conservative avant-garde, on the other, be critical creative and socially responsible. -尹一木

Why I was so excited by Jia Zhangke's Xiang Wu is because:
1. Only through this new generation can we fully realize that the 5th generation's critical energy had been exhausted already by the shift from ideological struggle to the mode of Hollywood narrative drama.
2. The new Urban Generation raised a serious question, that all the so-called "Culture Retrospection" by Chinese intellectuals during the last 20 years might have totally failed, looking at today's social condition in China. The traditional Romanticism and Humanism spirits of Chinese intellectuals became useless to deal with the complex social and political transformation in China.
3. Today's new Urban Generation - actually the same generation as us - is starting a new cycle of ideological struggle, by looking through the contemporary Chinese urbanization with their subversive aesthetics and producing strategy. This can be seen as parallel to the 5th Generation when they started their struggle by looking at the "Yellow Earth" 15 years ago, but under a totally different social context. Do the new generation's concepts and working process sound simple? I would say for Chinese architects, it may take at least five more years to fully conceptualize and then start their own critical work from their own discipline....
