Shanghai Embraces Swiss Chic
General Manager Julian van den Bogaerrde
Invites You to Swissôtel Grand Shanghai

In his “Night. Shanghai” which was filmed a year ago, director Zhang Yibai unfolds a poetic picture of Shanghai’s spectacular nocturnal views, including the “museum of international architecture” on the well-known Bund – a visible reminder of the city’s colonial heritage, the Oriental Pearl Tower (a landmark in Pudong) and the plant-converted art houses along the Suzhou Creek, from which he correctly captures the city’s artistic temperament.

You set out from the East Nanjing Road at dusk and stroll westwards in the midst of pedestrians and streams of vehicles. Walking past Shanghai Art Museum, in about thirty minutes you’ll be arriving at the Jing’an Temple and Paramount Hall (an old nightclub) alive in the conversation of old folks in Shanghai, as well as a dozen upscale shopping destinations on the West Nanjing Road that attract the younger generation.

Centrally located in Jing’an, the leading business district of Shanghai, the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai is a few steps from the West Nanjing Road, home to some of the city’s high-end commercial properties and exclusive shopping venues such as Jiu Guang City Plaza, Plaza 66 and CITIC Square. Close by are some of Shanghai’s best known interesting sites such as the Jing’an Temple, Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. A desirable location, luxurious accommodations, superb service and unique Swiss hospitality are combined with a Chinese touch to make the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai the best choice to both tourists and business travelers.

The first thing in sight once you step into the lobby is a huge elaborate glass “carving” by renowned Chinese artist Yang Jiusheng, which depicts the street map of Jing’an. Bathed in warm and gentle light, everything in the lobby is sweet and elegant without being too ostentatious. A bell takes the place of “Christmas tree” ornaments and flower pots to welcome visitors. Product of a top Swiss watchmaker, this bell is synonymous with Swiss culture, hospitality, quality and precision, said the general manager Mr. Julian van den Bogaerrde, his face glowing with a smile. Like its sister properties in other parts of the world, the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai captures modern and functional design, with local character and renowned standards of Swiss hospitality, service efficiency and product quality. The pairing of stained glass and shikumen, and that of colonnade and moon gate can only be described as original.

Julian is no stranger in Shanghai. Joining the Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts in 1999, he was a member of the opening team responsible for the choice of location and construction of the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai. He feels very lucky since he has made many friends here, including locals, and Shanghai’s impressive skyline makes him marvel at the city’s rapid development compared with a couple of years ago when he paid the first visit and found many places were still under construction. It’s wonderful to live in a vibrant international city like Shanghai, he said.

The Swissôtel brand has 27 properties around the world, mostly in Europe, but with plans to expand in all parts of the world, some already under construction. In China, three properties, namely Kunshan, Shanghai and Foshan, have opened in the last six months, attesting to the group’s commitment to delivering the mainland’s domestic and international travelers fine Swiss hospitality.

In reply to the enquiry about the Swissôtel’s less aggressive and relatively steady expansion in China’s booming hospitality market, Julian furnished a perfect explanation, “We prefer quality to quantity.” It echoes the refined image of the Swissôtel brand, its exclusivity and tailor-made service which suites every guest, people in constant pursuit of a comfort and sophisticated lifestyle.

With 467 rooms (including 15 suites), the Executive Floors, an exclusive Club Lounge as well as four restaurants and bars, the 5-star hotel meets the requirements of today’s savvy business and holiday travelers for efficiency and a tranquil harbor, a temporary home. The rooms, characterized by understated chic, overlook Shanghai’s stunning views and busy streets.

The Swissôtel Grand Shanghai is always associated with efficient service and quality product which can’t be achieved without great efforts, including the hotel’s applauded internal training system. According to the management, the quality of a hotel is accurately reflected by people, the staff, rather than by flashy decor, up-to-date technology or state-of-the-art facilities. It is the staff who interprets the Swissôtel concepts.

“First we must establish a free, relaxed and encouraging atmosphere for our staff who is being trained,” said Julian, clearly showing his eagerness to engage personally in staff training and share with them his experience accumulated over the past years. Better to teach one how to fish than give him fish, as the Chinese saying goes. Their enthusiasm for training is also felt by the guests.

Now that the Beijing Olympic Games is over, the 2010 Shanghai Expo naturally becomes the next focus of attention, and we expect even more from hotels. “The Swissôtel, especially the property in Beijing, has contributed to the successful Olympics. Customer feedback is satisfying. We plan to not only bring more surprises to Shanghai during the 5-month Expo, but continue to play an active role in the development of Shanghai as a first-class city after 2010. You have our full support,” the general manager gravely promised. Taking Shanghai as his second home, Julian van den Bogaerrde is evidently among those willingly to contribute to the World Expo coming in more five hundred days.

Its vibrant nightlife makes Shanghai the epitome of fashion in the eyes of many fun-seeking vacationers. As a matter of fact, it is popular for today’s career women to spend weekends at a hotel, where they can enjoy two days of luxury and attentive service, from spa and fine dining to personal trainer. Even a simple thing as room service can please them immensely. The limited availability of the Swissôtel properties suggests exclusivity pursued by many. Conscious of the trend, the 5-star Swissôtel Grand Shanghai launched promotions for individual or family guests including Sunday Brunch expected in September.

With an open kitchen, the in-hotel chocolate shop is a paradise for devotees since both their eyes and taste buds are satisfied. Shoppers can not only choose from a good variety of homemade Swiss-style chocolates known to the world for their silky smoothness and mellow taste, but also feast their eyes on the production process. “We plan to launch a Weekend Chocolate Buffet for our guests. If successful, you’ll find the buffet in our hotel everyday. I think we are the first to do this in Shanghai,” said Julian, evidently in high spirits. He believes this creative buffet will be linked to the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai, just like the fine watch-making expertise to Switzerland.

In answering a reader’s question about “green hotel”, Julian said, “The Swissôtel has been actively involved in environmental protection, building eco-friendly properties in China as well as elsewhere. We try to do as much as we can in energy conservation, such as more recycling, proper disposal of household rubbish and temperature control. We even have our staff trained to operate advanced environment-friendly equipment, but you’ll never do enough to save the earth.” Yes, we will never do enough to save the earth. The more the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai gets from society, the more it gives back.

The West Nanjing Road is lined with boutiques of Gucci, LV and Prada, to name a few. To some people these luxury brands seem to be the symbol of a sophisticated lifestyle, and this group is sure to be attracted by the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai which enjoys an outstanding location in downtown Shanghai and many special features, and delivers Swiss hospitality to domestic and international travelers.
When we left the deluxe hotel, the lights were all on. It was pretty late. We looked back to take a last look at the hotel, and found it was shining like a new star that graces Shanghai’s night sky.
