College and university students
are young, vigorous and eager to learn. They are curious about the
society of which they only have limited knowledge, and long for a
happy, prosperous future.
Dedicated to refunding the
society, “Grand Hotels” magazine has been actively involved in
organizing and attending activities for public welfare, which
include contacts with the campus. On June 6, Ms. Cherry Li, our
editor-in-chief, and Mr. Rauf Malik, general manager of the
Renaissance Yangtze Shanghai Hotel, were invited to deliver a
speech to students studying Tourism Marketing in Shanghai Normal
University.
A branch of the Tourism
Management major, Tourism Marketing aims to develop a new
generation of talented tourism managers capable of competing in the
international arena. Apart from basic principles of economics,
management and marketing, students will receive a systematic
education in a good number of related subjects, including travel
agency and hotel operation/management, so as to have a better
understanding of the status quo and trend of domestic and
international tourism industry. Graduates mostly work with
multinational hotel groups as well as large national or
international tourism corporations.
June 6 speech mainly concerned
hotels. It was opened by Cherry’s introduction of the “Grand
Hotels” magazine.
“Our readers include Fortune
500 companies, government organizations and some prestigious
enterprises. We have also established partnerships with the Dragon
TV production of ‘You Are the Chef’ and the Classic Radio FM947,
of which you must be fairly familiar. In addition to reading our
printed versions, you can access to us via TV, radio and the
internet. With these winning cards, we are able to better service
high-end consumers.”
Cherry went on to tell those
future employees of the hospitality industry that sincerity,
diligence and the down-to-earth attitude in work are of utmost
importance. “Whatever industry you’re going to enter, it is
extremely important that you should be sincere when dealing with
people. As far as a hotel is concerned, quality service is the key
to keeping customers. ” Cherry words provided guidance for the
university students of the new era, teaching them how to conduct
themselves and to handle affairs properly.
This was followed by Rauf Malik
who elaborated on the topic of “How to become a good (general)
manager?”
“First of all, you must have
an objective, something which would drive you forward. ‘He who
doesn’t want to be a general is not a good
soldier.’”
Rauf thus suggested they make a
five-year plan for their lives, which is to be realized step by
step. In addition, he also placed heavy emphasis on history,
geography and other minor subjects which would be of some benefits
to their future work, given the possibility that a hotel manager
would be located somewhere other than his/her hometown or home
country. After all, how can a manager do a good job if without the
necessary knowledge in local history and customs?
He continued to share his
management style and experience with the audience, which he
summarized as “devoted to work body and soul, and take care of the
associates”.
No sooner had he finished the
sentence than a student raised the question, “You said you’d take
care of your associates, then how do you manage them?” In reply,
Rauf explained, “I treat my associates as if they were my family,
and try my best to let them feel warm. But my attitude doesn’t
contradict the training system our hotel has been practicing, which
includes daily briefing and weekly study to improve the associates,
helping them acquire the service skills as required.
”
At his encouragement, more
questions were put forward by the enthusiastic
audience.
“Mr. Malik, you said you were
extremely busy and often worked till midnight, and you still had to
rise pretty early in the morning. Aren’t you tired?”
“No, not at all. I love this
job, and enjoy the hectic life very much. Besides, doing sports
helps relieve the stress.”
“Mr. Malik, what Chinese
cities have you visited? How will you compare them with those
foreign cities?”
“Besides Shanghai, I’ve been
to Beijing, Guangzhou, Urumchi and Harbin. Beijing reminds me of
Washington DC, the awesome political centre under the impact of
history and culture. Shanghai is the economic centre, modern and
fashionable, just like the New York City. Guangzhou has attracted
more attention lately, and I would compare it to San
Francesco.”
“The hospitality industry in
Europe and the U.S. has already reached maturity. Do you think it
will still be growing the fastest in the two areas in the next few
years, Mr. Malik? ”
“I think the hospitality
industry in Asia, especially in China and India, will grow the
fastest in the years to come. The two countries deserve extra
attention. You students are successors in the new era, so I hope
you can seize the opportunities, study real hard and contribute to
your motherland.” This answer was greeted with thunderous
applause.
With their lively, simple yet
thought-provoking speeches, Rauf Malik and Cherry Li have not only
broadened the students’ vision, but guided them to form a positive
outlook on future life and value. We believe it is one of the most
significant lessons they take in their lives.
