Cocoa Island
Cocoa Island
Cocoa Island is a blissful sanctuary
in the Maldives; a beguiling refuge that allows guests to live like
a castaway in elegant luxury.
COMO Hotels & Resorts–the creators of the Caribbean’s legendary island retreat Parrot Cay – opened Cocoa Island in January 2003, bringing their unique version of paradise to the Indian Ocean.
Known locally as Makunufushi, Cocoa Island sits in the less developed South Male Atoll. Here, powder-soft beaches are flecked with starfish, shells and coral, and fringed by palms, hibiscus, sea grape and ylang-ylang which scent the air. In the crystal clear waters of the lagoon, baby sharks and the occasional ray swim among shoals of trumpet fish; further out to sea dolphin and flying fish leap before the prows of local dhoni boats.
Cocoa Island is a calming refuge where guests can leave the world behind and slip into a timeless tranquillity lulled by the sounds of the ocean. Surrounded by views of an endless horizon, everywhere are quiet corners, secluded beaches and shady spots in which to soak up the calming environment.
The resort’s suites and villas sit off-shore on the southern side of Cocoa Island, directly over the waters of a shallow lagoon. Reached via planked walkways, all are built from treated pine wood imported from New Zealand and topped with thatch roofs. Inside, an elegant and restrained design employs high raftered ceilings, glossy teak flooring and whitewashed walls for simple beach-hut luxury, while rugs, floor cushions, embroidered drapes, and dark-wood furniture reflect inspiration from Southern India and colonial traditions.
There are 17 spacious Suites and Loft Suites which are styled on the traditional Maldivian dhoni boats used by local fishermen.
Each of the 8 Dhoni Standard Suites is designed in a split-level fashion. Two steps down from the large bedroom is a separate sitting space furnished with a huge day bed and large low table where exotic fruit platters are replenished daily. Flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows softened by sheer white drapes, the seating area leads onto a large private sun deck with loungers, a shaded dining table and steps down into the ocean. In the spacious bathroom a deep, double-ended bathtub set against a mirrored wall is the main focus.
Dhoni Loft Suites, of which there are 9, stretch over an expansive 110 sq. ms. due to a mezzanine bedroom (with en-suite WC) set in the rafters for commanding views over the Indian Ocean. Downstairs is the bathroom and a large, light sitting room, with L-shaped day bed and dining table, again opening onto a private sun deck.
But it is in the 4
one-bedroom villas and 2 awesome two-bedroom villas where the style
really takes off.
On land, Cocoa Island sustains the simple perfection of this barefoot luxury. At the ‘sunset’ peninsula, an infinity edge swimming pool melts into the horizon, and is flanked by Faru bar and Ufaa restaurant – the setting for Stana Johnson’s acclaimed and exquisite cuisine. The ‘sunrise’ end of the island is the location for COMOShambhala, with its open-air pavilions for massage and yoga, and the huge hydrotherapy pool.
Meanwhile, beneath the ocean, is some of the best snorkelling and SCUBA diving in the world. Cocoa Island‘s watersports centre provides expert guidance and all equipment necessary for enjoying all that the waters have to offer.
