Agricultural Wisdom

If everything has life, then our previous requirement of the city was excessive perfection, thinking that as long as the city is built or constructed, it must last for an indefinitely long time, you like it and your son should like it, your son likes it and your grandson should like it, with no end through posterity. We rack our brains to make a structure that we think will be favored by generations, but in fact this cannot be achieved. However, every architect thinks his creation should be favored by generations, which has resulted in the immutable status of a building with no way to make it regenerate. This is the permanence of the building, the permanence of the city. Such permanence is in reality a fundamental aim of Western culture. Westerners call buildings “memorials”, that is to say, once the building is built, it is permanent.

I don’t think the architects should create permanent memorials, whether for himself or for history. The architects should always think wisely. When the building expires and when the generation’s lifestyle is changing, how does your building meet the future requirements to a larger extent? This may become an important subject.

We should consider the role of agriculture more often. One of the ten questions I asked the world curators is, what impact do you think agriculture has on urbanization? Of course, when I was proposing this question, I did not mean to change the city from urban to rural, I just hope all of us can look at the city with agricultural wisdom. Why am I saying this? Because agriculture is the future industry. And why am I saying this? The farmers in Shaanxi Province often say: No matter how lucky you are this year, you may become fortuneless next year; no matter how misfortunate you are this year, you may be happy again next year.” That is to say, you cannot harvest as much wheat next year as you have this year, agriculture lasts forever, for tomorrow and for the future, so the agricultural industry is the happiest industry.

The future of agriculture is established on the trust that the future will replace what we have today; we have delivered our faith to the future. However, I must admit that after the appearance of modern industries, we believe that today is the best we will have, and that today is better than tomorrow. This idea is established on the deprivation of the future. Here I think that we should apply our agricultural wisdom to our high-rise buildings; they can be harvested time and again like wheat.
