Design rides passion plus experience. Passion guarantees you inexhaustible energy and increasing curiosity, experience brings you generosity and judgment. If you would want to pursue design as a career, nurture both of them! 

Development is no difference, or for that matter, nothing people do well escapes the two fundamental strength I stated. But development has a certain set of skills you may want to acquire. Obviously, development may bring you better financial return, although design (with passion) gives you a lot of joy!
