About two decades ago, Spring Festival Gala on CCTV became a household program in China. Up till now, many Chinese people, whether at home or abroad, like watching it and regard it as a banquet on TV. There are many reasons why the Gala came to success. Firstly, the organizers invite a lot of stars, who of course attract thousands of fans to give performances. Secondly, many people enjoy watching the Spring Festival Gala while eating a new year's meal with the whole family.
However, in recent years, the Spring Festival Gala has become less and less popular. We find the forms of performances on the gala are almost invariable. On the other hand, with the improvement of the living standards, people can watch a movie or a show whenever they want. That's why some people suggest that the Spring Festival Gala should be cancelled.
Maybe they make sense. However, in my opinion, we can hardly substitute another program for the Spring Festival Gala. I hope that this TV program can continue to flourish. I still remember that in the late 1990s, my family and I always waited for the program with patience before the Spring Festival. Besides the wonderful visual effects, some talk shows are memorable.
In fact, I'm sad because the gala is not so popular as before. But I think that as long as we are confident, it can be well, even better organized. The Gala is not only a TV program, but also a symbol of an era.

As is known to us, CCTV holds an annual evening party in order to celebrate the spring festival since 1980s. However, when it comes to the necessity of the evening party, people's opinions differ.

Some people who claim that the party should be canceled hold that the party doesn't bring any fun to us, and that we can't feel the atmosphere of the spring festival. For another, the party is a link between the overseas people and the motherland. Hence, judging from all the factors offered, I insist the party isn’t supposed to be canceled.

         Christmas arouses increasing attention year by year in China. Christmas cards become popular with students. People hold Christmas parties and exchange Christmas gifts. A lot or TV and radio programs about Christmas are on. Meanwhile the Spring Festival is less appealing (有吸引力的) to youngsters. Thus some people wonder whether Christmas will replace the Spring Festival.

Everyone gets a haircut and purchases new clothes. Red lanterns are hung everywhere. Red scrolls with complementary poetic couplets are pasted at every gate, one line on each side of the gate. On New Year's Eve, families have a reunion feast of jiaozi (dumplings) and niangao (a kind of sticky rice cake), and then stay up and talk through the night, talking about the past and the future.

When the clock rings to announce the arrival of the New Year, many households set off fireworks at almost the same time, creating a thunderous roar and clouds of smoke. This ceremonial use of fireworks is meant to send off the old and usher in the new.

The lively atmosphere not only fills every household, but permeates to streets and lanes. A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.

The Spring Festival is the New Year in China, just as Christmas in Britain. Chinese people attach much important to the Spring Festival, which is Chinese traditional festival. And the New Year’s Eve is the most important day in the Spring Festival. So they have many celebrations and customs on that day.

The New Year’s dinner is very tasteful and delicious, for it not only a dinner but also a family meeting. Each family member sits around the table and talks while eating. It stands for the harmony and unity of a family. Since the dinner is very important, it takes too much time and effort to prepare it.

After enjoying the New Year’s dinner, the family seat in the sofa and watch the television. Since New Year’s Eve comes, the sound of firecrackers will not disappear. Playing firecrackers is the necessary custom in New Year’s Eve.

We stay up all the night on New Year’s Eve sometimes. That’s a custom also. But the children are drove to sleep because they want to gain new year money gift to children. The new year money should be given to children on New Year’s Eve and press under the children’s pillow for a whole night.
