    什么是黄石公园，简单的说，就是坐在活火山上的公园。公园里到处可以看到蒸汽缭绕，间歇泉、热泉、喷气孔、泥温泉随处可见，这些地热景观表明了地下的火山活动。有科学家推测，世界下一次最有可能爆发的超级火山就在黄石公园。更有人传言说，2012年这里的火山将爆发，届时黄石将不复存在！还好，玛雅人的预言没有应验，黄石公园还在。不过对于黄石公园下面的火山不能小视，科学家们在公园内布置了测震仪和全球定位系统基站，监测着这里的地壳运动。

    从公园的北门进来，第一个景区就是猛犸温泉区。由于这里的地热景观层层叠叠呈梯田状，因此也叫猛犸梯田。猛犸梯田很像中国四川的黄龙，区别是形成黄龙景观的是冷泉，而这里是热泉。热气腾腾、带着硫磺味的瀑布从山上倾泻而下，造就出黄白相间、珊瑚般的熔岩池。

    在猛犸温泉区，由于地壳不断运动，一些温泉停止喷发了，形成的梯田不再美丽，慢慢风化，风烛残年。而新的温泉又开始喷发，生机勃勃，正在形成新的梯田、新的景观。
