Dear Friend of T.H. Tsien,
On December 1, 2009, T. H. Tsien, our respected Professor Emeritus of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Curator Emeritus of the East Asian Library, will celebrate his 100th birthday. As Dean of the Division of the Humanities, I admire and salute his distinguished career as scholar-librarian at the University of Chicago. His contributions to the early development of East Asian studies and East Asian librarianship at Chicago are praised by scholars throughout the world. As such, I see an opportunity to honor and celebrate his eminent career. I write to ask you and your institution to join in commemorating Professor Tsien’s many contributions to the University and to the field of Chinese studies by making a gift to create The T.H. Tsien Research Fund for Chinese Studies at the University of Chicago.
The T.H. Tsien Research Fund for Chinese Studies will establish and endow a research fund for the benefit of our faculty in Chinese studies to be administered by The Center for East Asian Studies, an interdepartmental unit of the University, to enhance opportunities available to scholars both in the United States and abroad. Strategic investments in our faculty reinforce Chicago’s ability to push intellectual boundaries and set global research agendas in the humanities. It is fortunate that celebrating Professor Tsien’s 100th birthday provides the opportunity of establishing an endowment in his name that perpetuates the study of a culture to which he devoted his life’s work.
Our goal is to establish this endowment with an amount of $500,000. Professor Tsien’s family has given a start to this project with a gift of $100,000. The Humanities Division is seeking additional contributions to make this beginning a full-fledged reality. I hope that you and your institution will consider joining the Tsien family in making a substantial gift towards establishing The T.H. Tsien Research Fund for Chinese Studies at the University of Chicago. Any gifts pledged or received will be announced to Professor Tsien at a private birthday celebration to be held in December. Please contact Nick Lopez, Associate Director of Alumni Relations and Development for the Humanities Division, at 773-702-9243 or via email at nalopez@uchicago.edu to ask questions or to make a gift. Such an endowment would appropriately honor Professor Tsien and his distinguished career as a teacher and librarian, and preserve his global impact on Chinese studies for future generations.
Thank you,
Martha
