I Remember

I was a young boy, Dad, when you said you had to leave. I remember Mom crying and hugging you. I remember you crying too. You put your hand on my shoulder and said you had something you wanted to show me. We went to the base that you worked at and went on the flight line. There you took me to your F-4 and explained to me what you had to do.

I remember Dad. I remember that you said you had to fly your bird in a war. You told me it might be dangerous. You told me that you may not come home. You told me it was something that men had to accept as a part of their responsibility to their country. I remember you said a man had to stand up and be counted when the time came. I remember Dad that you told me a man must be always be honest to himself, his country, his loved ones and his fellow man. You said a man must face whatever comes his way head on. Above all you said a man must be a MAN.

I remember when you picked me up and asked me to kiss your bird for good luck.

It’s been thirty years now Dad. You didn’t come home. I blamed myself for a long time thinking my kiss wasn’t lucky enough. I know now that wasn’t the reason and I want you to know that. The reason is in the things you taught me that day Dad. You stood true to what you believe in. you stood up and were counted. I’m proud to be your son. I love you Dad.

I remember Dad…
