Each time I see a balloon, my mind flies back to a memory of when I was a six-year-old girl. It was a rainy Sunday and my father had recently died. I asked my mom if Dad had gone to heaven. "Yes, honey. Of course." she said.

"Can we write him a letter?"

She paused, the longest pause of my short life, and answered, "Yes."

My heart jumped. "How? Does the mailman go there?" I asked.

"No, but I have an idea." Mom drove to a party store and returned with a red balloon. I asked her what it was for.

"Just wait, honey. You'll see." Mom told me to write my letter. Eagerly, I got my favorite pen, and poured out my six-year-old heart in the form of blue ink. I wrote about my day, what I learned at school, how Mom was doing, and even about what happened in a story I had read. For a few minutes it was as if Dad were still alive. I gave the letter to Mom. She read it over, and a smile crossed her face.

She made a hole in the corner of the letter where she looped the balloon string. We went outside and she gave me the balloon. It was still raining.

"Okay, on the count of three, let go. One, two, three."

The balloon, carrying my letter, darted upward against the rain. We watched until it was swallowed by the mass of clouds.

Later I realized, like the balloon, that Dad had never let his sickness get him down. He was strong. No matter what he suffered, he'd persevere, hang on, and finally transcend this cold world and his sick body. He rose into sky and became something beautiful. I watched until the balloon disappeared into the gray and white and I prayed that his strength was hereditary. I prayed to be a balloon.

Windows 8, apart from Windows 95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft’s operating system that has been changed from the core(核心)when compared to its former one. However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows 8.

Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus sides related to upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Speed—This is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows 7.

New passwords—Instead of typing your passwords, Windows 8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your password. This is not only practical but also extremely cool!

Windows 8 experience—Apart from computers, Windows 8 will be used on all devices, including smart phones, tablet PC’s and so on. Also, owing to the fact that it has been specifically designed with touch screen users in mind, Windows 8, besides using keyboard and mouse, will offer a whole new user experience.

However, there are still some disadvantages.

The first one that has to be mentioned is that there is no Start Menu from Windows. Yes, there is no Start button in the lower left corner, and this might be a real puzzle of many Windows users. Also, many users have had a problem to get used to the new interface(界面)introduced by Windows 8. The biggest problem that is worth noticing is that Windows 8 was originally designed for touch screen users, and this may have a bad effect on desktop users who have gotten used to doing everything with the help of their keyboard and mouse.

28. What does “plus sides” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?

A. Math symbols.    B. New rules.      C. Strengths.        D. Messages.

29. According to the text the greatest advantage of Windows 8 is its ______.

A. high speed                     B. complex passwords

C. unique experience             D. new interface

30. From the text we can learn that Windows 8 ______.

A. no longer requires a password

B. can be used on more than computers

C. will be popular with desktop users

D. was upgraded from windows 95

31. Many Windows 8 users face the problem that ______.

A. Start Menu is hidden in the lower left corner

B. they don’t get accustomed to the new interface

C. keyboard and mouse can’t be used any longer

D. they have to use fingerprints instead of button

D

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often lifeanddeath affairs. In their singleminded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.

32. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self respect.

B. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Opinions about competition are different among people.

33. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A. It builds up a sense of duty.

B. It pushes society forward.

C. It improves personal abilities.

D. It encourages individual efforts.

34. What’s the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”

A. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.

B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.

C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.

D. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others'.

35. Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

B. Every effort should be paid back.

C. Competition should be encouraged.

D. Winning should be a lifeanddeath matter.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week”.   36     I’d say, too many. Our dreams should not, and cannot wait. We have to go for them now! Here’s why.

  1.  37

Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is – everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day, or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don’t go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

  2. The world is waiting on your gift

I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting on YOU! Yes, YOU!   38   Sure, other people may be able to sing. But they’ll never be able to sing exactly like you. Sure other people can write, but they’ll never be able to write from the same perspective in which you write. Don’t deprive the world of your gift. It’s the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is, and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.

  3.   39

You can dream about writing the great American play that you want, but it’s never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually go to school to become equipped with the necessary tools to find that cure.  40   They require you to get your head out of the clouds, and actually do the work to make them happen. Get to it!

A. You can’t let fear win.

B. Tomorrow is not promised.

C. In other words, dreams don’t work unless you do.

D. Possibilities you never knew existed are waiting on you

E. How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow?

F. Unless you take the first step, your dreams will never come true.

G. You were born into the world with a unique gift, which nobody on this earth can copy.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.

In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people. Many people tried out each year for it but so many were turned away. It could only include the most excellent people in the field.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."

Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral(合唱)room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.

This year, there came a new music teacher, Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.

Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, "Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to do. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.

Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式作答。

The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.

Finally, the day of performance came.

Over the next month on Travel Adventures, we’ll be going to four very different places in the world, and taking a look at four out-of-this-world adventures. In the first week, we’ll take you to the rain forests of Brazil, and we will be taking a boat down the Amazon River. The highest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji, is actually a volcano, but hasn’t erupted for 300 years. In week two of this series we’ll climb to the top of this beautiful mountain, and see the stunning views at sunrise. In week three, we’re traveling to the border of the United States and Canada, where we’ll see the power of Niagara Falls. We’ll take a boat to the base of the falls, where we’ll see this natural wonder up close. Then, in week four, we’re off to Thailand. We’ll wander around this country, and look at some of the indescribable temples and ruins that still remain in this beautiful place.

新闻稿

Classroom mobile phone use banned

All primary and secondary school students in China will, in principle, be barred from bringing mobile phones to school, the Ministry of Education announced on Monday. The notice aims to protect students' eyesight, make sure they focus on their studies and prevent them from becoming addicted to the internet and online games.

If students must have a mobile phone at school, a special request should be submitted to school authorities along with written consent from their guardians, said the ministry. Once the request is approved, students should hand in their mobile phones to school authorities upon arrival. The phones will be kept together and should by no means be allowed into classrooms.

Schools should not assign or ask students to do homework via cellphones, and they should set up public phones and teacher hotlines for communication between parents and students, it added. Schools should set out rules for the management of cellphones and designate people to take custody of mobile phones brought to schools, it said.

Paragraph 1

The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral roomShe was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr. Buttler said to her with determined eyes, "Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself." Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.

Paragraph 2

Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. "Emily White!" Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel.
