浅说rose短语

谚语“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”意为“玫瑰不叫玫瑰，依然芬芳如故”“名称并不是重要的东西”。显然，此谚语中的rose作名词，是“玫瑰(花)”的意思。然而，rose的大写形式 --- Rose却是女子名“露丝”；rose可作形容词，意为“玫瑰色的”，还是动词rise的过去式。当rose出现在短语里时，意义更是多变，本文就说说含有rose的短语。

一．动词短语

1. be not all roses： 并非完美/有某种困苦(不利)。例如：

Being an opera star is not all roses by any means. 当上了歌剧明星也并非事事如意。

2. bring back the roses to one's cheeks：使脸上又复红润；使恢复健康。例如：

After a period of rest and recuperation, Janet brought the roses to her cheeks. 经过一段时间的休养，珍妮特脸上又复红润。

3. come out smelling of roses:保持清白, 出污泥而不染。例如：When the results of the fraud investigation were announced last week,

all the staff came up smelling of roses. 当上周“欺诈”调查的结果被公布时，所有员工都是清清白白的。

4. come up roses: (口语)进展顺利/成功。例如：

Everything is coming up roses. 一切都很顺利/ 结果良好。

5. gather (life’s) rose: 追求人生的快乐。例如：

Gather roses while you can. 趁年轻时享受人生及时行乐。

6. hold one’s roses: 打扮得花枝招展。例如：

She struggled with time, and held fast her roses in spite of him, till

the venerable thief appeared to have relinquished the spoil, as not worth the trouble of acquiring it. 她与时间格斗，硬要打扮得花枝招展，偷逝的流光拗她不过，只得听之任之。

7. lose one's roses： 失去红润的脸色。例如：

Due to his overwork, he has lost his roses gradually. 由于过度劳

累，他渐渐失去了红润的脸色。

8. see/look at things through/with rose-coloured glasses： 过分乐观地看待事务。例如：

The old man is always seeing everything through rose-coloured

glasses. 老人对一切事物总抱乐观态度。

9. (stop and) smell the roses: 停止忙碌并开始享受生活中的乐趣。例如：

You need to take some time to stop and smell the roses. 你有时也

得歇歇脚，享受一下生活的乐趣嘛。

10. take rose-coloured views: 持乐观看法。例如：

Don't take rose-coloured views too early. 不要过早地乐观。

11. wake up and smell the roses: 清醒面对现实；正视现实。例如： These problems are not going to fix themselves. Voters need to wake

up and smell the roses and elect someone who will get things done. 这些问题不会自行解决。选民须清醒面对现实，选出能干实事的人。

二．名词短语

1. a bed of roses: 称心如意/安乐的境遇。例如：

Life is not a bed of roses. 生活并非总是称心如意。

2. a path strewn with roses: 安乐的生活。例如：

In his remaining years, he lived a quiet life, a path strewn with roses.

他晚年过着平静、安乐的生活。

3. roses all the way: 一路顺利/一帆风顺。例如：

Wish you roses all the way! 祝你一路顺利！

4. everything’s roses: 一切尽如人意。例如：

She has had everything’s roses all her life. 她一辈子万事如意。

5. no rose without a thorn：没有无刺的玫瑰。例如：

There is no rose without a thorn. (谚语)世上没有十全十美的幸福。

6. rose between two thorns: 夹坐在两个男人之间的女子。例如：

Mary is like a rose between two thorns. 玛丽就像一个夹坐在两个

男人之间的可伶女子。

7. The/a blue rose：虚有之物；办不到的事；从未见过的东西。例如：

As far as I'm concerned，what you has mentioned is just like a blue

rose. 在我看来, 你所提到的就好像是我从未见过的东西。

三．rose的特别含义

1.     roses：红颜。例如：Her roses faded out of her cheeks. 她的红

颜渐渐地消褪。

2. rosebud：玫瑰花苞，(口语)寓意“豆蔻年华的少女”。

3. rose of Sharon: (植物)沙仑之玫瑰花，源自基督教《圣经》用语，指郁金香、番红花等。

4. the rosed Alps: 其中的rosed系形容词，用作文学语，意思是“玫瑰色的阿尔卑斯山”。

5. the Wars of the roses: 蔷薇战争(又称玫瑰战争；1455年─1485年)是英王爱德华三世(1327年-1377年在位)的两支后裔：兰开斯特家族Lancaster(以红玫瑰为族徽)和约克家族York(以白玫瑰为族徽)的支持者为了争夺英格兰王位而发生断断续续的内战。
