too到底表“肯定”还是“否定”

The shirt is too colorful for my taste. 这条裙子太花哨，不合我的口味。虽然句中没有任何表示否定意思的词，但是它却传递出否定的意义。初学者对too在句子中是表“否定”还是“肯定”往往难以界定。本文旨在厘清一些含too的句式、结构或习语到底是表否定还是肯定。

一. 表示否定意思类

1. too...to...：意思是“太……而不能……”，可以用含“so...that...”的复合句来转换。例如：

She is too young to tell right from wrong. =She is so young that she cannot tell right from wrong. 她还太小，不能分清是非。

2. be too much for sb.：意思是“……应付不了；非……所能忍受”。例如：

Their powerful volleyball spike was too much for the opponent. 他们的大力(排球)扣球让对手应付不了。

A cycling holiday is likely to be too much for an unfit person like me. 像我这种健康欠佳的身体，骑自行车度假很有可能应付不了。

3. too+ much+ to hope：意思是“绝不可以指望”。例如：

Perhaps it is too much to hope that Jack will be here to help you.也许期待杰克来这里帮助你是毫无指望的。

4. none too…: 接形容词或者副词，多用作表语，也作状语，意思是“不怎么样；一点也不”。例句：

I was none too thrilled to hear from him at this late hour. 在这么晚的时刻接到他的电话，我一点也兴奋不起来。

My daughter’s left hand grasped my shoulder, none to gently. 女儿一点也不温柔地用左手抓住我的肩。

二. 表示肯定意思类

1. too + adj. + to: 所接形容词是apt, anxious, eager, glad, happy, inclined, kind, pleased, ready, sad, satisfied和willing等表示感情的词，意思是“十分……, 极其……”。例如：

She is too ready to help others. 她十分乐于助人。

He is too sad to hear the bad news. 听到这个不幸的消息他太悲伤了。

2. not too... to...: 意思是“非常/十分/实在……”等，除了not, 还可以用never和nothing。例如：

Esperanto，which is an artificial language, is not too difficult to learn. 人造语言世界语十分容易学。

3. too... not to...: 运用不定式的否定形式构成双重否定，意思是“肯定/一定……”等。例如：

You are too wise not to solve the troublesome problem. 你很聪明, 肯定能解决这个棘手的问题。

Linda is too capable not to finish the task in given time. 琳达非常能干，一定能在规定时间内完成这项任务。

4. only/but too＋adj.＋to: 多接pleased, glad, delighted, thankful等表示心情的形容词，也接good和kind等描绘性的形容词。only/but相当于really, 而too又相当于very，译成“真是太……, 非常……”等。例如：

I'm only too glad to go with you.让我和你去，我真是太高兴了。

The place of interest is only too good to visit. 这处名胜古迹非常不错，很值得一看。

5. too+ adj. +for sb.: 一般接成对立的形容词，如small和large, hard和easy, light和heavy等，意思是“对……来说，太……”。例如：

This is too difficult a text for me. 这篇课文对我来说太难了。

Bailey junior appeared in a complete suit of cast off clothes several sizes too large for him. 小贝利露面儿了，穿着一身人家扔了的旧衣服，比他要大好几号。

6. can't/can never... too...：意思是“怎么……也不会过分”，可以转换成“The+比较级，The+比较级”结构。例句：

We cannot be too careful in doing experiments. = The more careful we are in doing experiments, the better it is. 我们做实验时越仔细越好。

A student can never read too many books. = The more books a student reads, the better it is.一个学生读多少书都不过分。
