例说for nothing的用法

for nothing.”是个介词短语，常用作状语。此外，英语中也有一些含有for nothing的固定用法。本文就此作一简析。

一. for nothing的用法

1. 相当于“to no purpose，in vain”，意思是“白白地，徒劳地”。例如：

Waled gave me the wrong address and made me go all that way for nothing. 瓦利德把地址搞错了，害得我白跑了一趟。

Billy Crystal makes us toil for nothing, while he himself remains idle. 比利·克里斯托使我们白白地辛苦了一场，而他自己却无所事事。

2. 相当于“for no good reason；without a reasonable justification”，意思是“没有正当理由，无充分理由”。例如：

They don’t call him Babyface Dickson for nothing！他们并非无缘无故地叫他“娃娃脸迪克森”的！

    I still don’t know that the boss scolded us for nothing yesterday. 我仍然纳闷：老板昨天为什么无理地责备我们。

3. 相当于“free of charge, at no cost, for no reward”，意思是“免费，不花代价，不取报酬”。例如：

Why pay a plumber when my brother will do it for nothing? 我弟弟可以免费干，何必要花钱去雇一个管道工呢？

He has contributed 30% of his collection to a local museum for nothing. 他已将自己30%的藏品无偿地献给了一家当地博物馆。

4. 相当于“have no influence on，take no effect”, 意思是“对……无影响，对……不起作用”。例如：

What you have said will be for nothing in his bad behavior. 你所说的话对他的不良行为的改变不会起任何作用。

It seems to her that it is a failure that her efforts are for nothing in her daughter’s growth. 在她看来，她的艰苦努力没有对女儿的成长产生影响就是一种失败。

5. 相当于“prove inferior by comparison；throw into the shade”，意思是“使相形见绌，使逊色”。例如：

I don’t think that our progress is for nothing to theirs. 我并不认为，我们的进步比他们的进步逊色。

To be frank, my handwriting is for nothing to that of Wang Hai. 坦诚地说，我的书法和王海的书法比起来相形见绌。

二. 含for nothing搭配短语的用法

1. count for nothing：相当于“be valueless, matter little”，意思是“毫无价值，毫不重要”。例如：

She sees me as a little kid who counts for nothing. 她认为我还是个无足轻重的小孩子。

All that extra effort counts for nothing now that they have cancelled the whole project. 他们既然已经取消了整个项目，现在一切额外努力都变得毫无价值了。

2. go for nothing：相当于“have no reward, be unavailing”，意思是“没有报酬，徒劳的”。例如：

A whole year's hard work has all gone for nothing. 整整一年的辛勤劳动都没有回报。

The teacher does hope that what we have donewon’t go for nothing. 老师肯定不希望我们所做的一切将会是徒劳的。

3. good for nothing：相当于“a useless person”, 意思是“无用的人，废物”。例如：

Mr. Green is always on his high horse. But he is, in fact, good for nothing. 格林先生总是盛气凌人的样子；其实，他就是个饭桶。

Everybody has his own merits and demerits. One should never think that he is perfect while others are all good for nothing. 每个人都有自己的优缺点, 不要把别人都看成一无是处, 而视自己十全十美。

4. not for nothing: 相当于“for a very good reason”, 意思是“有充分理由的，不是无缘无故的”。例如：

It is not for nothing that I have been as busy as a bee recently. 我最近非常的繁忙, 那并不是无缘无故的。

Not for nothing are Hunan and Hubei called the land of fish and rice. 两湖地区被称作“鱼米之乡”不是没有理由的。

5. want for nothing: 相当于“be well-fed and well-clothed”，意思是“丰衣足食，生活无困难”。例如：

Daniel is in poor health, but wants for nothing. 丹尼尔只是身体不佳，生活倒是无忧无虑。

Because he is always wanting for nothing, he doesn’t understand what a hard life means. 因为他总是丰衣足食，不理解艰难生活是啥味。
