The Hound of the Baskervilles
By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the finest detective novels feathuring the detective Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle---“the father of English detective novels”.
The story begins with a visit from Dr. Mortimer to Holmes and his honest assistant Watson in Baker Street,London. The doctor has a strange story to tell about the death of his dear friend as well as neibour,Sir Charles Baskerville, and about the terrible curse of the evil hound that has terrorised the Baskerville family for many centuries. At first,Holems just take it as a funny story and care less about it,but after Dr. Mortimer telling more detail doubts about the death of Sir Charles Baskerville,he is quite interested in the story and sends Watson to Baskerviile Hall where the Baskerville family has ever lived to find out more.
As soon as Watson arrives at Baskerville,he comes into contact with a series of strang and mysterious people:the old servant Barrymore and his wife;Stapleton,a strang naturalist and his chaming sister;Selden,an escaped prisoner who turns out to be the brother of servant Barrymore's wife. All of these kind of people behave suspiciously, and all have dark secrets in Watson's mind. Those people lived in Baskerville are living in an unimaginable world of misty windswept moorlands, cold unwelcoming houses, unearthly frightening woman's crying sounds in the midnight, etc. Besides all of that , Watson also finds the servant Barrymore's suspicious actions in the midnight and a little piece of incompletely burnt letter which was sent from a woman named Laura Lyons to Sir Chales before he dead.In the middle of all these is Bakersville Hall, and one thing is soon clear that the newly newly arrived young Sir Henry Baskerville, the only heir in law who has been left the Hall and a large margin of money by his uncle,Sir Charles Bakersville,is in great danger. Surrounding with all these misteries,Watson has fell into clouds and decides to get strength to the enemy's,when Sherlock Holmes appears unexpectedly.
As a matter of fact,in order to find out the truth,Holmes goes alone after Watson and Sir Henry's leave from London to Baskerville and hides himself in the moorland where rarely has humans, bearing the terriable thunderstroms, coldness and loneliness.Even though,Holmes has successfully recieved all the massages from Watson and some traces about the case which makes him believe that the death of old Charles is a murder. At the same time, the criminal seems to lose his patience and can't wait killing the escaped prisoner Selden by mistake because he has wore Sir Henry's clothes that night.Things come to the surface and Holmes' inference has been made even more convinced.
Then Holmes uses Sir Henry Baskerville as a bait decivisely and seccessfully finds the criminal---Stapleton and his evil dog.Stapleton is a son of Roger Baskerville, the younger brother of Sir Charles, who escaped with an evil reputation to Central America. It was said that Roger had dead, but actually he did married and his son married a local beautiful girl named Beryl Garcia.Because of stealing money and opening a school with bad reputation,he finnally changed his name to Stapleton and pretend he and his wife to be brother and sister, and broght the ramains of his fortune and his skills as a naturalist to the south of England.
In order to make his family home all his own,he acted a series of conspiracies. He developed a friendship with Sir Charle and learnt from Dr. Mortimer that the old man's heart was weak and only a small shock might kill him.He had also learnt that Sir Charles took the hound story very seriously. So he thought out a way to kill Sir Charles Baskervill without being suspected of murder by buying the strongest dog he could found in London. Then, one day Sir Charles asked him to join him in helping the unfortunate Mrs Laura Lyous.Stapleton, who was pretending to be married, agreed. He soon gained influence over her and promised to marry her when she was divorced.Suddenly he learnt that Sir Charles was about to leave the Hall,so he acted immediately and put pressure on Mrs Lyons to write a letter, urging the old man to see her before he left for London. Then he persuaded her not to go and got the chance to kill him.
After murdering Sir Charles Bskerville,Stapleton attempts to kill Sir Henry by the same hound.Fortunately,Helmos brings his tricks to light. With the help of Watson and police Lestrade, they kill the horrible dog and Stapleton, the murder, gets sunk in the moor when he trys to escape in a hurry after the failure of the murder.
The writer did an excellent job on portraying characters and structures of detective storys with attactive plots as well as analyzing the inside mantel of a person. While reading I was in the Holmes' time, solving problems with him and his assistant Watson. As a scentense written in the book"The world is full of clear things which nobody notices",I have learnt from the book that there is always a reason for someone doing something and the only work I should do is to determine whether I should find them.As a student of law major I also have learnt many law affairs from the book and I'll be always appriciate those words in the book,"One can not always have the success for which on hopes",because
truth will be always the truth, after all.
