Calgary's reputation as a centre of excellence in the wireless
technology sector will be put to the test in an exciting
initiative, called Wireless City, funded in part by the Government
of Canada and the Government of Alberta.
Wireless City was officially launched on Monday, June 23, 2003.
Two new Wireless City showcase projects were launched at the same
time. The first is the Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspot which
offers limited, free wireless Internet access to the public using
Wi-Fi technology. The second is a distinctive Wireless City Hotspot
logo that will help people locate Hotspot access zones in
Calgary.
Showcase Hotspot Location
The Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspot offers four separate
Access Zones in downtown Calgary:
- The Calgary Municipal Building - Atrium
- The W. R. Castell Central Library
- Olympic Plaza
- Stephen Avenue Walk - between Centre Street and 1st Street
SW
Wireless City was piloted in 2002 as part of C-Prosperity, a
Calgary Economic Development (CED) program. The initiative is
managed by Calgary Technologies Inc., a not-for-profit organization
that promotes economic development in Calgary's advanced technology
sector.
"Growing Calgary's already impressive technology sector requires
a vision for what businesses and people will be looking for in the
short and long term and developing solutions that meet those
needs," said Mayor Dave Bronconnier. "Through
Calgary Technologies Inc. and programs like the Wireless City
initiative, we are earning Calgary a reputation as a leading centre
for bringing together solid business intelligence and new
technology opportunities."
What is a Hotspot?
The Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspot demonstrates the
flexibility and portability of wireless Internet access, and gives
Calgarians the opportunity to try out Wi-Fi (802.11b) technology.
Four Internet access zones will be available at: Olympic Plaza, the
W.R. Castell Calgary Public Library, the Calgary Municipal
Building, and Stephen Avenue Walk.
What can users do?
Users will be able to send and receive e-mails, and search the
Web, from their laptop, tablet, or PDA without having to "plug in".
All that's required is a 802.11b network interface, a wireless
feature that's standard on most new computers, but also easy to
purchase and install. The Calgary Wireless City's Showcase Hotspot
is unusual because it allows users to access the Internet through
multiple wireless internet service providers (WISPs).
How do I find a Hotspot?
The distinctive, Wireless City Hotspot logo will be displayed in
shop and restaurant windows throughout Calgary to indicate where
public wireless access is available.
