The Qualities the Bear’s Rivals Need to Have
After having read the William Faulkner’s novel The Bear, it suddenly occurred to remember some words written by an American general Douglas MacArthur—“Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom and the meekness of true strength. ”
It was an advice Douglas MacArthur said to his son. Difficult as it is, the protagonist “the boy” in the novel achieves it to some extent. In other word, the boy has qualities of studiousness, acuteness, adventurism and persistence.
With an epiphany, the boy speculates over his father’s words and his father reads two lines of poem to him: “She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss / for ever wilt thou love, and she be fair.”
Finally the boy’s father exposes
the reasons, which is also the gloriousness and beauties of the
reverence of life, Sam and he gave up their ideal to his
son—“Courage, and honor, and pride.” his father said, “and
pity, and love of justice and of liberty. They all touch the heart,
and what the heart holds to becomes truth, as far as we know truth.
Do you see now?” (para 75)
Studiousness, acuteness, adventurism and persistence are foundations of the reverence of life. The reverence of life is the most required quality the bear’s rivals need to have.
