INTRUDER WALKS INTO WHITE HOUSE: An intruder scaled the White House’s north fence on Friday and made it all the way into the front door before being caught by the Secret Service, triggering a rare evacuation of most of the people inside and bringing the Secret Service under intense scrutiny. President Barack Obama and his daughters had just left the White House when Omar J. Gonzalez, a 42-year-old unarmed Texan, made it in and remaining staffers and journalists were rushed out through a side door. Jason Chaffetz, a Republican who chairs the House of Representatives’ subpanel on national security oversight, called the incident “totally unacceptable,” but just one of many recent instances of Secret Service failings. “Unfortunately, they are failing to do their job,” Chaffetz said. “These are good men and women, but the Secret Service leadership has a lot of questions to answer.” The Secret Service has said the incident will be reviewed to make sure proper protocols were followed.
