Seventy-eight people were killed when a C-130 military-transport plane struck a mountain during bad weather. The personnel on the plane were traveling to northern Morocco from a city in Western Sahara, a hotly disputed breakaway territory that Morocco claimed in 1979 but which has attempted to maintain its independence. Of the dead, 60 were members of the military, 12 were civilians, and nine were members of the crew. Three people on board survived, according to the Royal Armed Forces.
